BREAKING: AP source: Mid-American Conference becomes 1st major college football conference to cancel fall season.

FILE - In this March 12, 2020, file photo, Mid-American Conference commissioner Jon Steinbrecher speaks to the media in Cleveland. The Mid-American Conference on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020, became the first league competing at college football’s highest level to cancel its fall season because of COVID-19 concerns.

A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press the university president’s voted to not play in the fall and consider a spring season. The person spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because an official announcement was still being prepared. The conference that built a brand name — #MACtion — and managed to score an ESPN deal by playing football games on Tuesdays and Wednesday nights is now the first to surrender to the pandemic, hoping it can regroup in with a spring season.

But in FBS, conferences have been putting plans in place to — however tentative — for the coming season. The Power Five went first and then the so-called Group of Five, with the American Athletic, Sun Belt, Mountain West and Conference USA all finalizing schedule models this week.

RhondaCHSAA We could be playing football right now. Utah has been playing for 3 weeks and cases are dropping. No courage here in Colorado!

Covid is going to be there whether we as play or not. Might as well play football and dance.

Covi

No chance the MAC could afford to play under these circumstances. The safety protocols are financially untenable...no non-conference paydays.

Some organizations have leaders with the head screwed on not like others.

That sucks!

I thought MAC Conference was D2 for some reason.

Dominoes...

DunedainRanger9 Fantastic news - perhaps now the massive resources of these institutions can be redirected to previously low-priority, ancillary areas like academics.

Safest and most intelligent decision

👎👎

It’s postponed not canceled

OH NOOO! 😏

ScottWapnerCNBC The mAc isn’t a major conference

Define major

Boooooo

Not sure the MAC is a major football conference.

ScottWapnerCNBC An intelligent decision!

They won't be the last. There are simply too many pieces involved.

No fans in the stands and no money games against big conference schools means they can't afford to play sports.

No MACtion?

All those coaches salaries? Scholarship and travel costs?

keikoinboston College athletics are in more dire straights than people realize. This will impact thousands if not tens of thousands of jobs. Many lower division schools (like D3; who rely on athletics for student enrollment numbers) are taking massive hits that will put many out of business.

Never heard of that conference.

Do you blame them? It’s too costly and nearly impossible to operate safely while the country is in the midst of growing widespread infections (with no real national mitigation and containment plans). Likely more to follow suit.

First domino...more to come

BarstoolBigCat will be devastated.

Pray for BarstoolBigCat

I love football. Been waiting all year for it. But id rather then cancel so the players are healthy to play another year, than deal with the orange dictators inability to do anything rational and moral.

They should all cancel.

Directional school conference. Nothing to see here...

You can’t not wear your mask and enjoy football. SEC is next. The south is Rump country.

Hopefully there will be a vaccine soon and then make the vaccine mandatory for everyone.

Stupid .....

Trump Kills Football!!!!!

That was a conference 😂

Unfortunately, the right thing to. Our lives will be cancelled too.
