But the genocide was too massive to hide. Today, the site of Auschwitz-Birkenau endures as the leading symbol of the terror of the Holocaust. Its iconic status is such that every year it registers a record number of visitors — 2.3 million last year alone. Auschwitz is in fact not one camp, but two: Auschwitz I, built in an abandoned Polish military base, and Auschwitz II, or Birkenau, a much bigger complex that went up later about two miles away to expedite the Nazis’ Final Solution.

Schreiber’s photos show the notorious main gate with the cynical Nazi slogan “Arbeit Macht Frei” — a German phrase meaning “work will set you free.”

BradleyWhitford Remember that the buildings and ovens you usually see in films and photos are at the Auschwitz camp. The wholesale slaughter mostly happened at the Birkenau annex, which the Germans tried to destroy as they retreated and the Soviets finished destroying after they liberated it.

In Feb. 1945 Soviet NKVD started to run the camp with about 1.5K German POWs and thousands of Polish & Silesian civilian inmates. Soviets forced them to work as slaves before sending to USSR as gulag prisoners. At least 144 persons died in the camp. NKVD camp was closed in '46.

The visit is a must

It is impossible to comprehend the death, horror, and level of suffering these innocent Jewish men, women & children were forced to endure. The world has to be committed that these crimes against humanity will never occur again. HolocaustRemembrance
