At only 7 years old, Ji-Young is making history as the first Asian American muppet in the “Sesame Street” canon.

. She is Korean American and has two passions: rocking out on her electric guitar and skateboarding. The children’s TV program, which first aired 52 years ago this month, gave The Associated Press a first look at its adorable new occupant.

Ji-Young’s existence is the culmination of a lot of discussions after the events of 2020 — George Floyd’s death and anti-Asian hate incidents. Like a lot of companies, “Sesame Street” reflected on how it could “meet the moment,” said Kay Wilson Stallings, executive vice-president of Creative and Production for Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind “Sesame Street.”

“When we knew we were going to be doing this work that was going to focus on the Asian and Pacific Islanders experience, we of course knew we needed to create an Asian muppet as well,” Stallings said. “Being an upstander means you point out things that are wrong or something that someone does or says that is based on their negative attitude towards the person because of the color of their skin or the language they speak or where they’re from,” Stallings said. “We want our audience to understand they can be upstanders.”

“I remember like the Atlanta shootings and how terrifying that was for me,” Kim said. “My one hope, obviously, is to actually help teach what racism is, help teach kids to be able to recognize it and then speak out against it. But then my other hope for Ji-Young is that she just normalizes seeing different kinds of looking kids on TV.”

Ji-Young will be heavily present throughout the show's 53rd season next year, Stallings reassured. She also won't just be utilized for content related to racial justice. She will pop up in various digital programs, live-action and animated.

Now what fucking heritage is there for Orange Ernie?

They have race now?

An Asian American Muppet? - is Ernie a descendent of the Oompa Loompas? - I always suspected that he was - and what ethnicity are Grover, Oscar and Cookie Monster - there are all you know, Muppets, and I think they have their own Universe.

Muppets have races!?

the fuck does that make bert?

If there's one thing I learned from Sesame Street, it was FIRST look at skin color.

Who hell cares

My gay lovers Asian daughter will be so happy!

they have races?

I love all the adults doing deep a analysis on the ethnicities and anatomy of kids show puppets

I bet she got vaccinated too? What a joke!

She don't look very Asian. Asians should be pissed!

Holy shit !!! Don't let Ted Cruz get wind of this. We are already on the brink of the great Muppet War of 2022

This is important

Maybe I'm seeing it wrong but I have a Asian doctor and his eyes are slanted. This tan puppet has round eyes.

This is racist against muppets.

Why don't they bring back Roosevelt Franklin or Kingston Livingston? Or maybe a Caucasian Muppet? The Count is from the Carpathians, but he's purple. Ernie is orange and Bert yellow. Prairie Dawn isn't around much any more, but she's purple as well.

How do muppets have ages? Is that from the manufacturing date?

Nothing wrong with diversity guys. Take rosita for example. She is Mexican. Not new to have a muppet with a specific race/ethnicity explicitly told to the viewer and in fact it’s a great new addition!

Of course there's people mad about this

So Ernie is Orange, does that make him bad?

If she is 7, that’s not normal to be hanging out with that orange man that is sitting next to her. He must be at least 60 now. Do better Sesame Street.

Love 💕

did y'all forget that any other race besides white just... exists?

What race is Oscar?

Nice seeing the first little Asian kid on Sesame Street. But overall, Sesame street should reflect all of the nation’s children “Red and Yellow Black & White all are precious in God’s sight”-:)🙏😊👍

There's multiple colored puppets on this show, has been for years.

This is about to trigger some nutty people..

Did Ernie leave Bert?

I’ll echo what so many have stated... “Checking to see which year this is !?! Wow”

Haha... so the bird muppet represents... birds.

The Chinese and japanese will not be pleased.🤔

Of course she is…can tell by the eyes

They are afraid of diversity, they feel their power slipping and 2020 election proved it.

AP Exclusive: 'Sesame Street' debuts Asian American muppetWhat's in a name? Well, for Ji-Young, the newest muppet resident of “Sesame Street,” her name is a sign she was meant to live there. “So, in Korean traditionally the two syllables they each mean something different and Ji means, like, smart or wise. Hot Smoked Salmon, Soba and Asian Greens Salad Recipe on Food52I got hooked on hot-smoked salmon while living in England where my corner fishmonger sold me some of his personally recommended local stuff. I had to limit myself to buying this only once a week. It was sweet and salty, firm and creamy all at the same time. The “hot” here doesn’t mean spice. It’s the temperature at which the smoking process occurs (between 145-150 degrees Fahrenheit), which fully cooks the fish, giving it a light pink silken internal texture a tawny, smoky skin. I used it in maki rolls, with asparagus and hollandaise and in my daughter’s lunchbox. And I concocted this Asian-inspired noodle salad which has a good contrast of flavor, texture and color. You may be able to find good hot smoked salmon where you live and by all means use it to make this salad as a very easy, very cool dinner on a hot night. I, unfortunately can’t get my hands on the good stuff in Central PA, so I’ve learned to hot smoke my own salmon for this recipe using a stovetop smoking contraption involving my wok, a bunch of tin foil and the lid of my lobster pot, a trick adeptly demonstrated by former New York Times Magazine food writer and current Chow.com food editor Jill Santopietro.
