'The reaction to Biles' decision suggests we simply aren't where we need to be when it comes to understanding mental illness,' ChrisCillizza writes. | Analysis

Consider if, following that vault -- and Biles' decision to pull herself out of the the rest of that competition and the individual all-around one as well -- it was revealed that she had sprained her ankle. Or had a stress reaction in her foot. Or had torn her anterior cruciate ligament. The universal reaction would be one of shock and disappointment, both that she couldn't compete and that we couldn't see her compete.

In each episode of his weekly YouTube show, Chris Cillizza will delve a little deeper into the surreal world of politics. Click to subscribe! What Biles' withdrawal highlights is the yawning gap between how we think about and treat physical illness versus mental illness. And our ongoing -- and demonstrably false -- belief that the two are not interrelated.Consider an example far from the Olympics. In my late 30s my left ankle started bothering me. I went to a doctor. He told me I had loose cartilage and bits of bone floating around in there -- from years of pickup basketball and rolled ankles.

ChrisCillizza DUH!

ChrisCillizza Very good

ChrisCillizza Meanwhile LeMoney James ran away from his last olympics. These players only care for personal stats in their stat-padding league. They've disrespected the olympics. That's it.

ChrisCillizza so maybe she needs to be treated, and not to participate in competitions officially using something that is forbidden to others? There are Paralympic games for disabled people, and psychiatric therapy for people like her.

ChrisCillizza

ChrisCillizza When it comes to psychology most of the people have medieval approach. And combined with social norms and the so-called “normal” the punditry around this subject by the political opinion makers is the worst.

ChrisCillizza This is a decent piece about how little we understand or value mental health. There is also a great deal of sexism and racism at play. People make assumptions that these women should perform for us at all costs- nope ! they are in charge of their bodies, no one else

ChrisCillizza Blessed is the man/woman who didn't experienced depression once in their life.

ChrisCillizza I do not agree that she is mentally sick, just natural what ‘overcomes’ her.

ChrisCillizza The problem (for me anyways) is the timing of when she backed out. Earlier, and Skinner could have taken her place. Her “I need to focus on myself” quote didn’t help either. Living near Milwaukee- if Giannis walked to locker room in 4th qtr he would never live it down.

ChrisCillizza That is something you really know about.

ChrisCillizza It also suggests the USA and the world is full of people who watch sports once every 4 years, but believe to be experts in the subject, criticizing without understanding at all the situation

ChrisCillizza What a joke

ChrisCillizza No ….she isn’t where most elite athletes are when it’s time to step up and be there for your team! Never saw Jordan or Bird or Magic or Brady miss any championship games.

ChrisCillizza Simone does not have a mental illness stupid. She had a glitch in her confident level. When a golfer does this its call the shanks or whatever. When a gymnast does it its called the twisties which can lead to bad injuries. She just had a bad moment at the wrong time.

ChrisCillizza Who ever suggested that Biles had a mental illness? She, perhaps, has a mental block, but that appears it. Is a writer with writer’s block mentally ill?

ChrisCillizza Its insulting to call the twisties mental illness. I love Biles but this is an absurdity.

ChrisCillizza Mental illness? There’s nothing wrong with her. She’s just a weak person. Stop talking about her and celebrate SunisaLee

ChrisCillizza CNN you have tweeted more than 10 times the mental illness issues about the athlete. Are you of any help to the mental trauma of the athlete or just earning money out of it

ChrisCillizza 'The endless coverage and beautifying to Biles' quit suggests we simply aren't where we need to be when it comes to understanding there are other athletes who didn't quit and are still fighting on arena'

ChrisCillizza It’s true

ChrisCillizza I’m sick of hearing about her.if she’s not going to compete then she needs to go home.

ChrisCillizza Don’t quit. Time for a new America’s Sweetheart.

ChrisCillizza It’s hard to justify a mental illness when you’re sitting in front of cameras answering questions to the media every day

ChrisCillizza I really haven't seen much criticism of her.

ChrisCillizza The reason they’re pushing the mental illness game is to cover up this….

ChrisCillizza Enough….there are many people and help to highlight not just this one over and over. Keep a variety highlighted as this is a vital issue

ChrisCillizza 🤣😂🤣You honestly think THAT’S the problem, a misunderstanding of mental illness? I’ll tell you what, I’ll agree with you as long as you agree that a man who thinks he needs a billion dollars is also a sign of mental illness.

ChrisCillizza You is America sweetheart without the love in the stands makes a big problem cheering from the stands is power

ChrisCillizza Maybe portraying a transient episode of anxiety with lost confidence as a mental illness isn't helping. Just a thought.

ChrisCillizza 😢😢😢😢

ChrisCillizza I'm competing like shit I must have a mental illness lol

Opinion | Simone Biles and the New Black Power of ‘No’Opinion: Admitting vulnerability has long been anathema to Black Americans striving to win in all kinds of hostile environments, including athletics. Finally, that’s changing. I don't follow gymnastics. I don't pretend to know the full extent of what it means to be black. But I do know that this athlete did what was right for her health & the health of the sport. It takes a tremendous amount of courage to stop, take stock, and live to see another day.
