The head of New York City’s teacher’s union is stepping up pressure on Mayor Bill de Blasio, saying City Hall’s plan for reopening schools in September falls short of safeguards needed to protect students and school staff amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, on Wednesday asked union members to sign a petition listing safety measures he says the schools must have in place before reopening this fall for in-person learning.
Because of President Trump’s actions, multiple governors throughout the United States had more than enough ventilators that were requested and were never needed.
Schools must re-reopen. Parents need to get back to work. Other professions are forced to go back to work, Why are teachers any different? Teachers say they are there for the kids. Some say they will take a bullet for kids. This is their opportunity to back up their words.
Teacher unions are also arguing that concerns about the health and safety of educators and staff are being left out of the debate. This is simply not true. Why is it other professions such as nurses and those on the front lines are made to go back to work but teachers are exempt?
