“Is this potato male or female?” might sound nonsensical. But in a new study, it helped neuroscientists tease out something new about human perception.

Patterns in everyday objects, from construction fixtures to the clouds in the sky, can look like faces.People often perceive imaginary faces as having a gender. In a study with nearly 4,000 American adults, about 80 percent of participants labelled imaginary faces — such as the one in this slice of cheese — as male more often than female.Just 3 percent of survey participants labelled the faces, such as the one in this ice cream cone, as female more often than male.

It’s not yet clear why people perceive the basic structure of a face as male by default, Wardle says. But in a more recent study, she and her colleagues found the same gender bias in grade school kids as young as about 5 — suggesting it arises early in life. “I was not surprised that people would assign gender to illusory faces,” says Sheng He, a cognitive neuroscientist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing who was not involved in the research. He was, however, surprised by the strength of the gender bias that Wardle’s team discovered and wonders whether people living in matriarchal societies would show the same — or perhaps the opposite — bias in their reading of faces.

Try throwing eyelashes on it

SteveWorks4You Most women would want hide those faces. If it looks stupid and incongruint in real life it's likely going to be a man 'grinning'. Same goes for inanimate objects.

Women are beautiful and don't look, in any way, like a cheese grater?

For the longest time it was considered grammatically correct to refer to someone whose gender was unknown as 'he'. Even my somewhat radical feminist high school English teacher taught us that if someone's gender was unknown it was correct to use 'he'. 1/2

How many times do you retweet the same article before you move on to something different?

face or no we are most likely to see a kitchen object as female

Being a woman in this society sucks sometimes

they are ebiz

Cool! Fun science stuff… 👍

It's because often maleness is identified by a lack of female characteristics rather than an abundance of male characteristics.

Not about gender. Navajos see a rabbit in the moon. And it is plainly visible.

I see a woman in the moon. And so, I think, did the Greeks: “Selene”

It’s not just in faces. I’ve noticed that many people assume animals are male until proven otherwise. “Look at Mr. Rabbit,” says the mother to her child. A lifetime of movies, books & comments with that assumption?

It’s because the moon looks bald, if the moon had what appeared to be hair (which it doesn’t) then we’d see a lady in the night sky, but unfortunately it’s what appears to be a face on a bald head

That's because men are cooler

I see Snoopy holding a basketball, rest of y'all are crazy.

That's because men are the normal

That's a Dude with a killer Mohawk

science news: screw famine, climate change and deadly diseases! smileys on cheese graters! 🤘🏼🎉🍾

Looks like a typical metalhead with iroquois hair, all genders.

Please don't assume my potatoes gender!

WTF! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Just illustrates the fact that all this gender bending nonsense is imaginary. When you socially construct castles in the sky and try to live in them, the subsequent society you embrace is in for a hard fall.

Gay.

The explanation did not make the question any less silly.

Agree💯

Since we are living under the boot-heel of the patriarchy, this is not surprising.

I don't believe they assume gender on imaginary faces at all unless directly asked to do so

Kind of a pointless exercise, don't you think?

I always assume they are trans and 😂

If you don't want people to objectify women, don't complain when they start out with the baby step of not womanifying objects.

Men happy Wom grumpy

Gay

No wonder I am intimidated by the parking meter. That big hulk of a metal.

IMO this is an interesting topic. Perhaps because 'male' is perceived, though much subconsciously due to our cultural formation, as the 'default' human experience?

IMO the much more interesting study is about why we humans give human attributes to 'things'

Easy. More males are bald.

So what does it say about me? I perceive neither male nor female. Sometimes not even a face, just an object

Wow, under the heading, who gives a F?

That smiley face is there mocking you bc you’re about the slice the shite out of your fingers 😂😂😂😂 oopsie

Because Americans are taught to assume male God...duh

If I say it looks like a robot, what does that mean? 🤖

I'm American and I think this one is female 🤷‍♂️

We should fight this sexism by adorning all clouds and artefacts with features that resemble long hair

Ppl 'assume imaginary faces are male' bc males are imaginary. The only actual beings are female. From them comes all. We males are at best disposable, like all other drones in our natural world. But our lives are far easier, simple, & we know how fortunate we are. Thx ladies😉

Where is the potato?

Chip in my mind is potato chip 😂
