WASHINGTON—As they reminisced 20 years later about a devastating and historic national tragedy, Americans reportedly took note Saturday of how the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks were the last time the country was able to put aside its differences and stand united in a bloody, homicidal thirst for vengeance. “Nowadays, there’s political polarization everywhere you look, but back then, we found a shared sense of purpose and agreed to just,” said Cleveland native Lewis Romano, one of the millions of U.

citizens who waxed nostalgic for the days following 9/11, when Americans from all walks of life coalesced around common demands for widespread death, carnage, and destruction in a faraway place that most of them would never visit. “After those towers fell, it didn’t matter if you were from a blue state or a red state, because we all wanted the same thing—blood—and we wanted it immediately.

sorry Onion but Metal Gear Rising did this joke in 2013

The only thing I finally recall related to that incident is... you STILL suck, Onion.

Lotta people pissing and shitting itt over how tasteless this is, and I couldn't care less. What I do have a problem with is the idea that America was 'united' in the wake of 9/11. Maybe White America mostly was, but I doubt the POCs attacked in the streets were feeling the love.

Onion never misses

To put this in context it was only 20 years after world war II that they were making fun of Nazis on Hogan's heroes. So to say this is too soon doesn't seem to match up with the history of satire.

Nah I remember being 'cautioned' by the media as to who we should seek retribution from.

Too soon

Hey, who doesn’t still want to send some goat herders to Allah?

Ouch…. just Ouch……

So, current strategy working

usually love u onion but F U with this graphic ever. do love you but pls do better

Truth is never pretty

Holy shit!!

Those were the days....

Wow, I like dark humor, but that's neither funny, nor tasteful.

Not sure there’s ever a time to use 9/11 images for satire. Much like using the Holocaust for an ironic gag. Whilst we should always have the ability to mock ourselves, as human beings we should always have the compass to just say no, that’s untouchable and leave to sad history.

TooSoon

Always too soon

Too soon

Newgrounds was just as based

I truly hope so. I don’t want more Americans die I don’t want Americans killing brown people ever again.

COVID divided us, maybe the next terror attack will reunite us.

Sick

Let's fix that, shall we?

Not clever or funny.

I mean, yeah. When it comes to doing the right thing, Americans go out of their way to do the opposite. But when it comes to fucking everything up, we're the world champs, and no one can take that away from us!

cwheiden

And just like that, I'm out. I know you don't care but whoever wrote this sounds like an idiot or a child who wasn't there/old enough to remember. We were united as a country, a people, in pain and sorrow and loss that outweighed any distraction or triviality.

Hell yeah. Turn their ass to glass!

Cùng xây dựng895 gia đình nhỏ..

Absolutely savage!

In awfully poor taste. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Unfollowed

Fail.

Not your finest work.

Does anyone remember when the onion was funny? It's been a minute

NoLore Where the venn diagrams of butthurt kvetching and Al Qaeda boasting overlap.

We weren't united. Millions protested against the wars.

wolfenstein91

Ehhhh not really a great topic for satire

where's the lie?

basically

I think people joined together in their anger, most never seeing an attack on US soil. But with that eventually comes reality. People also revolted against the war relatively quickly and in 2003 the largest anti - war protest ever worldwide began

I know it's satire but there were literally millions of us who marched against going to war and into Iraq. Millions.

I had a great 9/11 joke... but I forgot.

So true.

At least the Onion is over all the performative BS.

totally nailed it.

Lol this is directed at anyone who says they miss the America of September 12th

Oh to be Muslim straight in the states after that

john_sipher

Of

Always too soon. Some things should stand safe from satire. Still love The O. Just a little disappointed on this one.

r/nottheonion material.

There's a special species present around us that still celebrates a great sense of joy and victory looking at video clippings of aircrafts piercing the world trade center on 9/11. That particular species needs to be recognised not ignored or denied. Terrorism has no religion

All these dudes saying “now isn’t the time” 😭 buddy now is exactly the time.

the onion does it's job once again

uh-huh…

Never forget.

The same people that question mask wearing and vaccinations also never never question the official government story of 9/11

OldElmTree ouch

JuliusGoat Too soon.

pdfreshness So tempting to post this on my FB (I live in AL)

I thought the onion was satirical?

Onion's getting too close to the truth here ... isn't it a little worrying when satire is more honest than most 'news' outlets?

'better them than we'

Cheney/Bush ensured success of the hijackers. And they need to face trial.

everybody so mad like what else did yall expect the onion to do

Oh stop judging The Onion with naivety and knee jerk patriotism it isn’t “funny” but there’s a bit of truth in demonizing and creating many long term wounds in an attempt to dole out justice

This is disgusting. Take it down.

Pot luck, everybody brings something to the table. Magnificent Melissa & 9/11 is a love letter to NYC. Enjoy!

For all y’all offended… it’s really about America’s response to 9/11… not 9/11 itself. Considering we just got out of Afghanistan 20 years later and it was controversial. Seems a little sarcastic soul searching might be in order… Maybe… or yeah it could be really cringey 🤷‍♂️

Bingo

This may be a little too close to the truth for comfort.

john_sipher Fondly?

dtaberski

meh

The fuckin onion

I still remember your first publication after 9/11. You guys should re-publish it!!

lthomasnews

We can't even unite over wearing masks and sparing children.

They don't miss often

RedBeretsM4All That is the most truthfully profound post the Onion has ever posted. I remember Americans wanting blood after this, and we invaded the WRONG country and murdered innocent Iraqis.

The media always gets nostalgic around 9/11. They can still smell blood.

theluma

Revisionists: 'We all came together as one after that day.' Muslim Americans in every state: 'Bullshit.'🙄

GDOpener considering the tragedy it isnt a false statement

It's certainly tasteless but chances are that many of the folks on here crying foul are the same ones that tell Black people they should just 'get over' slavery.

Nah, they were also united in mourning and literally helping each other physically but also emotionally

I miss a sense of unity with my fellow Americans. The anger and hatred in this divide is difficult. It wasn’t “bloodlust”. It was the unity of a nation in pain.

Some of you need to accept the notion that there is a now mature generation that didn’t experience 9/11. It’s as poignant to them as Pearl Harbor or Vietnam was to us.

Meanwhile we're losing the same amount of people every 2 days due to Covid, yet we can't even unite to get vaccinated and wear a fucking mask. 'Never forget' - we already fucking forgot.

The drastic raise of xenophobia right afterwards toward other Americans still persists, no?

Too soon?

funny because it's true

How insensitive. There's a time and place for everything.

It will ALWAYS be too soon on this on….

AccidentalJournalism strikes again

ouch

Indeed! The government co-opted the terrible tragedy for Political purposes via MSM and Political spectral. When the towers fell my heart brook for all those folks who died and their familys. My Soul sank seeing Hate elevated to a Religion.

The libs in the replies are having a hard time.

It's funny to see how sensitive people will forever be about 9/11

I'm here to read the comments of the mentally handicapped individuals who think this is a serious headline.

Its funny seeing all the newly woke zoomers getting all worked up about the Onion articles nowadays. They have been releasing quality news satire articles since you were in nappies, unsubscribe if you want to be spoonfed Michael McIntyre jokes about his kitchen cupboard.

Based tweet. Remembering 9/11 isn’t about mourning

Be as brutal as you want, but besides being not remotely funny, joke just comes across as forced n smug.

do you open your presents on the morning of 9/11 or the evening?

Nailed it.

9-11 🇺🇸 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 What are former or current presidents doing today? BUSH… speaking at Shanksville, 🇺🇸 OBAMA …visiting World Trade Center🇺🇸 BIDEN …visiting at all three sites 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 TRUMP … speaking at a boxing match in Hollywood FL 🤡😈🤮

there is nothing fond about it but ok

Meh, it's a gift that keeps on giving.

I thought the onion is supposed to be satirical 🤷

Coming into the replies like

Ouch. Hits a little to close to home 😱

At a certain point dark humor stops being humor and is just an outright insult.

Onion is stinky and too pungent today

bold af for posting this today instead of waiting until tomorrow tomorrow i love it

Top Notch commentary...

This is going to be a good one, i know the onion does not disappoint with their comment section

I thought y'all only delt spoofs!

Yeah alot of simple minded revenge fantasies were going on 20 years ago.

Brutally accurate.

Nope

Not funny.

only joke is it took a couple days to do so

oh this comment section is going to be good

The US govt does shit like this all over the world all the time

Amen.

Last time?
