for its 31st season on January 10, kicking off an all-star lineup of 34 different winemaker-hosted dinners, seminars, receptions, and brunches that runs until March 27. Amazingly, the festival’s founder, Chef Daniel Bruce, one of the world’s leading experts on food and wine pairings, has been at the helm the entire time.
You can choose from nearly three dozen varied events, including single vineyard brunches and dinners, as well as numerous seminars to learn more about the winemaking process, and the festival’s very popular themed events, including the Grand Opening reception and Valentine’s Day Champagne Dinner Dance with the fabled house of Moet & Chandon. Some of the perennial favorite themed dinners returning in 2020 include the Battle of the Cabernets, Meritage Madness, and Old World/ New World Pinot.
Unlike the so-called “Grand Tastings” you find at most festivals, with dozens of winemakers of varied quality pouring minuscule samples in big tents, each option is an intimate special event, mostly full service, sit down multi-course meals co-hosted by Bruce, explaining the dishes and pairings, and the winemaker, explaining the wines and how he or she created and selected them. These often include special limited editions that are never for sale.
When he is not running his festival, Bruce is the hotel’s Executive Chef, overseeing all its outlets but especially the flagship Forbes 4-Star, one of the world’s greatest wine-focused restaurants, with 750 labels and dishes specifically designed to match different kinds of wines. As he explained, “For over three decades we’ve been welcoming some of the most renowned winemakers in the world and emerging talent to the Boston Wine Festival and this year is no different.
Earlier this year the hotel completed a three-year, top to bottom renovation that touched every facet, and all guest rooms - which were already deluxe even by 5-Star standards - are like new, featuring large and opulent bathrooms with top-shelf amenities, plus tons of other well-thought out touches.
