Amazon Has A ‘Fresh’ Take On Grocery Shopping—And It’s Not Whole Foods

Amazon, the world’s biggest online retailer, is strengthening its bid to expand its offline ventures as it prepares to open a new supermarket in Los Angeles, the company

on Thursday—one of seven across Southern California and Chicago slated to open by the e-commerce giant.Amazon Fresh, a concept which allows customers to skip checkout queues through the company’s “Dash Cart” technology, will first launch in L.A.’s Woodland Hills neighbourhood to selected customers in the coming days, and to the wider public in coming weeks.

The firm’s latest physical store concept will add to its portfolio of some 500 Whole Foods stores after the company bought the chain for more than $13 billion in 2017, as well as some 25 Amazon Go cashier-less convenience stores aimed primarily at time-pressed office workers. But the ‘Fresh’ concept differs from the existing Whole Foods and Go stores as it will stock national brands and lower-priced options for local consumers, and is not focused on organic or natural products, according to Jeff Helbling, Amazon’s Vice President.

The store will also have an area where customers can pick up and return online orders, and ask Alexa for assistance.Amazon has been a big winner from the pandemic as homebound consumers turned to online shopping and deliveries. Last month, the online retail giant posted record second quarter earnings of $5.2 billion, with sales up 40% on last year to nearly $90 billion, although physical store revenue dipped some 13%. Meanwhile, Amazon stock is up 80% since the start of the year.
