How innovative solutions can provide flexible care to Medicare beneficiaries — no matter where they live UHC ad

Seniors are increasingly gravitating towards options to access care safely in a setting that's tailored to their needs.

According to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 40% of US adults delayed or avoided medical care in 2020 due to COVID-19. Colleen Nolan has first-hand experience with the effectiveness of in-home clinical visits. She is one of over 2,000 healthcare practitioners who conducted nearly 1.7 million in-home clinical visits in 2020 through HouseCalls, a UnitedHealthcare program that offers eligible Medicare members a yearly visit with a licensed clinician.

That all changed when the COVID-19 virus quickly spread around the world, shutting down even essential services, such as non-emergency physician office visits. Seniors flocked to telehealth to access care — which has typically been offered at no charge during the pandemic — in droves: By the end of 2020, nearly 40% of Medicare members had completed a telehealth visit.

The home can now be the most appropriate site of clinical care for all kinds of services for seniors, including preventive care, identifying and addressing social determinants of health, managing behavioral health conditions, supporting post-acute recovery, and more. Furthermore, clinical care at home is more comfortable and convenient for patients, especially for people with mobility challenges, complex conditions, or those who are recovering from a hospital stay.
