Instead, Pence — speaking Thursday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. — insisted he was not constitutionally empowered to reverse the election results when he presided over the counting of electoral votes in Congress in January. Trump had urged him to do so in the hours before the former president’s supporters stormed the Capitol.

In his remarks, Pence described Jan. 6 as “a dark day in the history of the United States of America” and credited “the swift action of the Capitol Police and law enforcement” for quelling the violence, allowing him and lawmakers to resume the formal certification of the election results later that day. headtopics.com

“Now, there are those in our party who believe that in my position as presiding officer over the joint session, that I possessed the authority to reject or return electoral votes certified by states,” Pence said. “But the Constitution provides the vice president with no such authority before the joint session of Congress. And the truth is, there’s almost no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president.”

Pence went on to say he “will always be proud that we did our part on that tragic day to reconvene the Congress and fulfill our duty under the Constitution and the laws of the United States,” while also sympathizing with “the disappointment many feel” about the election’s outcome.

“I can relate. I was on the ballot,” he said. “But, you know, there’s more at stake than our party and our political fortunes in this moment. If we lose faith in the Constitution, we won’t just lose elections. We’ll lose our country.”Pence, who has slowly returned to political speaking engagements in recent weeks, previously broached the subject of Jan. 6 at a speech in New Hampshire earlier this month, where he similarly declined to attack Trump and asserted he was proud of the former administration’s accomplishments.

“President Trump and I have spoken many times since we left office. And I don’t know if we’ll ever see eye to eye on that day,” Pence said in New Hampshire. Shortly before the insurrection on Jan. 6, Trump told supporters at a fiery rally outside the White House that he hoped Pence would “do the right thing” when presiding over the joint session of Congress. headtopics.com

“I just spoke to Mike. I said: ‘Mike, that doesn’t take courage. What takes courage is to do nothing. That takes courage,’” Trump said at the Jan. 6 rally. “And then we’re stuck with a president who lost the election by a lot, and we have to live with that for four more years. We’re just not going to let that happen.”

As the assault on the Capitol was actively unfolding, Trump tweeted: “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution.”Security video of the Capitol riot released in February showed the then-vice president being whisked out of the Senate chamber, revealing just how close he came to the mob of Trump supporters — some of whom chanted “Hang Mike Pence!”

On Thursday, Pence, widely viewed as a potential 2024 Republican candidate for president, was careful to show no animosity toward Trump, even eliciting applause as he compared the former president favorably to Ronald Reagan.“President Donald Trump is also one of a kind. He, too, disrupted the status quo. He challenged the establishment. He invigorated our movement. And he set a bold new course for America in the 21st century,” Pence said at the Reagan Library. “And now, as then, there is no going back.”

Bye Felicia! Either man up! Or shut up! 🤨 Marshmallow! Pence will pander to the Evangelical base using Christian talking points and religious jargon! He will pander to the moderate Republicans by tiptoeing around the Jan 6th insurrection! Pence needs to man up! Call out Trump and the white supremacist who are destroying the GOP!

Pence is pandering! He is not real leader! 🤨His desperation for relevance in the Republican Party is showing! That’s all! 🤔 Pence has not “condemned” any of Trump’s abuses of power, extortion of foreign allies, overreach or undermining of our governmental agencies! Hitched to wrong wagon and now he's gotta try to join reality 🤣

Where was this 6 months ago? reminds me of a country song ' its a little too late to do the right thing now' Mike_Pence the time to open your mouth was 01/06/2021 not almost 6 months later. You will never be president, you're too subservient to rule Tell that to radical right wing radio hosts like scotthennen.

Talk is cheap...actions speak louder than words. Yet he cannot come out publicly and denounce…. I respect Pence for doing the right thing.

Pence says he was 'proud' to follow the Constitution on Jan. 6 to certify Biden's winFormer VP Mike Pence's remarks included an expansive reflection of his role on January 6 certifying President Biden’s victory, explaining his actions as abiding by the law, despite pressure from former President Trump not to do so We are bound to time limit, We, high cases, still have hope that our cases will be called upon for an interview, If there is a will there is a way, Hopefully diversityvisa is given equal priority! USEmbassyNepal USAmbNepal, can act sympathetically SaveDiversityVisa DV2021 And yet he still bends at the knee to Trump. Trump won.

Agreed The softest acknowledgment of reality, 7 months after the fact How many people have said that clearly since then? Now here he is 6 months later finally admitting it and he thinks he is the first to discover that fact. Of course, his base will never buy it. Where was he all along? The truth is Mike Pence will NEVER be President.

I have Pride in you, Mike. Finally. 🏳️‍🌈 Former Vice-President belatedly describes performing basic Constitutional duties of his office and recieves praise as if he's created a precedent. MDomino07 That’s a start. He 'forcefully' stated a clear and obvious truth? How brave of him. Pence went on to say he “will always be proud that we did our part on that tragic day to reconvene the Congress and fulfill our duty under the Constitution and the laws of the United States.”

Pence Slams Trump’s ‘Un-American’ Claims He Could Overturn The ElectionPence made a clear appeal to Trump supporters who believe he is a “traitor,” but said he will “always be proud” he helped certify the election. Democrats &Republicans are not an example of how political parties must overcome their differences.

Pence contradicts Trump on January 6, calling plan to decertify 2020 election 'un-American'Former Vice President Mike Pence rebuked former President Donald Trump on Thursday night on the question of overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election. Pence also said he will 'always be proud' of his role in affirming the election results. This political theater. Democracy, voting, Russia, blah blah blah. Same, trite nonsense. When did he grow a set bro what

Mike Pence brands critical race theory 'state-sanctioned racism'The former vice president said the GOP 'must stop the efforts to rewrite American history.' When history is written from predominantly one perspective, often to benefit that same perspective it is fair to re-examine it. Furthermore, as more evidence becomes available our understanding of the past must also be re-examined. Racism to those who don't want their history of injustices and atrocities inflicted brought to light! So my Mexican American history where the US kicked my ancestors off their land, made them claim they were white to buy it back, and then lynched Mexicans in Texas who didn’t go along with it is racist? Or do you want kids to think the SW was all white settlers?

In Departure From Trump World, Pence Says He’s ‘Proud’ Of Role Certifying 2020 ElectionThe former vice president said there is 'no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president.' nice I love when the Repugs fight amongst each other. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Didn't they boo him and call him a traitor at CPAC. The thing about the GOP, they eat and turn on their with the quickness.
