Khanyisa, an albino elephant calf rescued from a poaching snare, roams with her adopted herd in the day and at night sleeps with her surrogate mother, a sheep named Lammie

Khanyisa, an albino elephant calf rescued after being caught in a poaching snare, is seen with Lammie, her companion sheep at Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development sanctuary, near Hoedspruit, South Africa on May 23, 2021.

She was later transferred to Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development , where she now lives with a herd of elephants led by patriarchal bull, Jabulani. Albino elephants are rare, but those who have the condition can adapt to their environment. Khanyisa, whose name means sunshine in the local Tsonga language, is able to shelter in larger elephants' shadows on sunny days to protect her skin.
