Alabama man who pretended to be his dead father to defraud retirement system sentenced to prison

Gary Dean Gibbs, 52, was federally charged earlier this year with one count of wire fraud. He pleaded guilty to the crime.

From September 2017 until February 2022, an Alabama man concealed his father’s death from the General Retirement System for Employees of Jefferson County and collected the retirement funds.

Manasco this week sentenced Gibbs to one year and one day. He was also ordered to pay $132,646 restitution to the General Retirement System for Employees of Jefferson County, also known as GRS, according to a joint announcement Wednesday by Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona and FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Feliz Rivera-Esparra.
