Could Republican Matt Bevin’s loss in Kentucky spell doom for the most powerful Republican in Congress?

released this summer, somber music plays as McGrath recalls how as a girl, she “wrote a letter to my senator telling him I wanted to fly fighter jets in combat to fight for my country and that women should be able to do that.” “He never wrote back,” she says, “and I’ve often wondered how many other people did Mitch McConnell never take the time to write back, or even think about.

It’s clear in talking with Nickolas that he’s already developed a plot. “I think that there is something tremendous about, you know, that McConnell did nothing to help his young constituent, to encourage his young constituent, and nonetheless, she accomplished all her dreams on her own,” he says. “And now she’s come back to Kentucky to defeat him.”

Yet McGrath has a tricky line to walk in Kentucky. Like Beshear, she’ll have to win over voters who support Trump but are unhappy with McConnell, as well as those who might have voted for Democrats in the past but feel disconnected from the party. As Democrats have moved left, says Duffy, these voters have fallen off.

So far McGrath’s strategy has been to go after McConnell without attacking Trump. She’s even made the argument that McConnell is holding up Trump’s agenda, that “a lot of what has stood in the way of what Donald Trump promised is Senator McConnell.” It’s a spin that has, but one she stood by during a phone interview in late October. “This is a state the president won by a lot, and I want to keep my focus on McConnell,” she said.
