, “The future is FLA Gov. DeSantis today. The governor who left the beaches and almost all commerce open as the virus spread like wildfire across the country is now blaming his state’s outbreak on New York and New Yorkers fleeing to Florida.”, New Yorkers are quickly finding themselves with no good options. They can stay hunkered down in tiny apartments and listen to the sirens all night, or they can be pilloried for fleeing, a sign of disloyalty and privilege.
Donald Trump came along to remind us that Puerto Rico is not really America, and Detroit is not really America, and California is definitively notSome of this is the result of obvious differences between the two events; the coronavirus comes with a heaping side of shunning, though much of what we’re seeing now goes well beyond the kind of shunning the coronavirus medically requires. But as Gessen reminds us: Tragedy always needs others.
It was always a fairy tale, but it was surely a nice one. Columbine’s tragedy was America’s tragedy. Las Vegas happened to all of us. Parkland, Florida, was everyone’s worst national nightmare. Regional differences were downplayed so we could grieve together. But Donald Trump came along to remind us that Puerto Rico is not really America, and Detroit is not really America, and California is definitively not America.
New York almost makes it too easy. The city has long been associated with unbounded greed and wealth, cultural elitism, and ethnic diversity. That encompasses
If I'm being cynical, it's because 9/11 came with an easy answer that appealed to the American psyche while actually addressing the coronavirus would force people to ask themselves a lot of very uncomfortable questions about their beliefs and the system they live in.
I don't think this is true at all. You cite the horrific response by the criminal in the White House and some other schmuck governors (like the joke here in Florida) as proof that NY is not being rallied behind? I'm sorry I fell for this click bait.
Did you not get enough negative responses 2 days ago when you posted this same shit? Let’s start with this:
That’s not true.
They hate us....they’ve told us.... A LOT. Over and over again. And will continue to tell us just as soon as this is over.
The people of NY, including their leaders, are the worst of the worst. Arrogant, elitist pricks who feel superior to the rest of the country. A close heat between NY & Cali... hope they all disappear
Buildings falling down is not contagious.
NY: This is what every other city will look like in 2-3 weeks. Also NY: Why won't you send us all of your resources?
Oh! And remember when you flee the city to not forget how awful the South is and to avoid it at all costs. ... Thanks.
The rest of America is shutdown and dealing with a pandemic & many unemployed to boot.
wildly different scenarios. it seems selfish to demand the nation’s undivided attention while every state is struggling with the same threat
Perhaps Ms. Lithwick should consider that after years of scornful hate and diatribes aimed at those inbred red state religious bitter clinger deplorable hicks in flyover country, that perhaps the antipathy to NYC is well-earned, and perhaps she should look inside for the cause.
Because Millennials took over that city & turned it into a corporate wasteland for the rich. There is no nightlife anymore. There's a Starbucks on every corner. Mom and pop stores are mostly gone. I think people are rooting for NYC, but we are all heavily affected by this crisis.
The scenario is much different. New York should have been more prepared for this.
now we worship a false god
