Hours after the Taliban announced a cease-fire, 11 bus passengers died and at least 24 were wounded in a roadside bombing.

The Afghan government called for a permanent truce with the Taliban on Monday amid increasing attacks after the group announced a three-day cease-fire for Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday that comes during the end of the holy month of Ramadan this week.

Taliban fighters have been directed to halt all attacks in the meantime"to provide a peaceful and secure atmosphere to our compatriots ... so that they may celebrate this joyous occasion with a greater peace of mind," Suhail Shaheen, a spokesman for the group, told theAfghanistan's presidential palace denounced the Taliban in a statement for the rising assaults but noted that the announced cease-fire will be observed.
