Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, touches the casket after a memorial service for former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol as Reid lies in state, Jan. 12, in Washington.Senators Mitt Romney and Mike Lee of Utah come from Mormon royalty. They both attended Brigham Young University, their family names are hallmarks of Mormon history, and each had fathers who held prominent positions in government and the church.
Former U.S. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, who converted to Mormonism as a college undergraduate, represented an alternative path within Mormon politics. Ironically, it may well be Reid, the scrappy old boxer yet measured, moderate democrat whose views more closely align with the rising generation of Mormons. In this sense, Reid is not an anomaly of a bygone era but a bellwether of things to come.
When Lee arrived in Washington as a freshman senator in 2011, Reid was the Democratic leader in the Senate and had recently helped pass the Affordable Care Act, one of the greatest accomplishments of his career. Lee had ridden the anti-Obamacare wave to the Senate, representing a generation of Mormons who saw the Republican party and its platform as the only political entity morally compatible with their religion.
“Lee is pretty skilled at opposing things. What we haven’t seen yet is a constructive legislative agenda,” Riess said. “You can’t sustain good government on rage.”
Reid had a filthy mouth and was a poor representation of the church. He would often use his opportunities to speak in a church to spread his politics. It really showed the Nevada saints what his heart was set on.
Addisongraham10 My cousin, Lora Thomas has been telling good things about you. Keep up the good work. Our country needs more young people like you. Thanks for all you do. Dale Palmer
Addisongraham10 Good article, Addison!
Only the ones in Salt Lake County.
Addisongraham10 Great column Addison. I have a Granddaughter who is currently serving a mission and a lot of your points describe her to a “T”. Your views give an old guy hope for the future of America. Thanks
Mitt Romney and Harry Reid are the same
I hope you’re right Addison, though at 75 years of old, I may not live to see it.
🤣🤣except when he was involved with dirty deeds that led up to the standoff with the Bundy ranch
Completely agree.
Well written and clear! Hope to see this happen. Just remember to vote ya young whipper snappers!
I tried to subscribe online, I really did. Form didn't work.
Great article. I noticed several others he wrote too. They look good.
Nicely written, Addison. As a fellow BYU alum and “youngish” Latter-day Saint (Gen X) I definitely have to agree. Most church members in my age range are baffled by the Trump movement (which includes Lee) and see it as totally antithetical to Christian discipleship.
Not very complimentary for up and coming LDS, I'd say.
Not for nothing but we were lucky to purchase a home formerly owned by one of his kids. It was beautiful. Realizing he spent time there was pretty neat.
Ruh Roh!! Old man OaksDallinH isn’t going to enjoy this piece.
This is accurate especially Lee
Reid straight up lied about Romney not paying his taxes and then bragged about it. It is a poor member of the church that ignores the article of faith about bearing false witness. Especially against a fellow LDS member. Does Addison think the end justifies the means in religion?
