Prominent Hong Kong democracy activist Nathan Law leaves the city for an undisclosed location after testifying at a U.S. congressional hearing about the tough national security law China had imposed on the semi-autonomous territory.

FILE - In this Jan. 27, 2018, file photo, pro-democracy activist Nathan Law, along with Agnes Chow and Joshua Wong, attends a press conference in Hong Kong. Prominent Hong Kong democracy activist Nathan Law has left the city for an undisclosed location, he revealed on his Facebook page shortly after testifying at a U.S. congressional hearing about the tough national security law China had imposed on the semi-autonomous territory.

“As a global-facing activist, the choices I have are stark: to stay silent from now on, or to keep engaging in private diplomacy so I can warn the world of the threat of Chinese authoritarian expansion,” he said. “I made the decision when I agreed to testify before the U.S. Congress.”Law told reporters in a WhatsApp message that he would not reveal his whereabouts and situation based on “risk assessment.

Law, 26, rose to prominence in Hong Kong as one of the student leaders of the pro-democracy Umbrella Revolution in 2014. In 2016, he became the youngest lawmaker elected to the city’s legislature but was later disqualified for allegedly not taking the oath in a proper manner. Critics say the law effectively ends the “one country, two systems” framework under which the city was promised a high degree of autonomy when it reverted from British to Chinese rule in 1997.

He was one of those loud and first to say “He could die for Hong Kong”, and is the first to flees Hong Kong, left his followers to die for Hong Kong. Never come back. 他這種無恥之徒,做一世流浪狗好了。香港的監獄沒白飯他吃。

Funny how the so called 'brave HongKongProtests freedom activists' alway flea like cowardly cockroaches when shit gets real. He got paid handsomely by foreign governments and now it's time for him to go hide in some beach city with a nice house.

Meanwhile Trump and his mouthpieces keep spouting the lie that Dems are always 'soft on China.' Easy to disprove, because of Trump actually calling on that communist nation to help him win re-election, and praising them for the way they handled protest in Tienanmen Square.

PattyArquette China agreed to Hong Kong Autonomy til 2047,50yrs of One Nation,Two Systems, but reneged.I think China should lose Hong Kong&more for that, lots, maybe everything.Lord sick bigger&worse bullies on the tyrants, against each other even, neutralize Them&give us peace.May it be so,Amen.

AmyMiranda Awwww, too bad the US can't fund meddling in China anymore. At least Israel can still buy the entire US government, though!

Your headline 'Activist leaves Hong Kong after new law to advocate abroad' is kind of awkward. Had to read it twice. grammar

Hong Kong a semi-autonomous territory as per new law & order offends the older control seems a illegal approach.

Could have stayed there, join BLM protest against AR15 nationalists, protesters shooting each others, car being driven into crowd and see which one is more fun.

Reminder: American George Floyd's brother testified in the UN about human rights in America. American's need to fix human rights in America FIRST to be eligible to tutor the world.

Hong Kong Activist Nathan Law Says He Has Fled Abroad Amid Beijing-Backed CrackdownThe prominent pro-democracy activist Nathan Law says he has fled Hong Kong following China's enactment of a new national security law, which he said amounts to a 'complete destruction' of the territory's autonomy. Shambles. I’m saying this as our world is in it, not just one country. China’s new national security law reminds me of Israel’s new laws that Netanyahu got enacted that do the same thing, and anti-BDS laws that also do the same thing: stifle democracy and free speech.

Hong Kong police make first arrest under new security lawNEW: A protester carrying a flag calling for Hong Kong's independence is the first person to be arrested under the city's controversial new national security law, which makes secessionist, subversive, or terrorist activities illegal. Nixon should be dug up, slapped, and re-buried. It's time to allow those who want to leave HK to do so in a peaceful and orderly fashion, perhaps the UK could offer residents visas? Also HK is now indistinct from the rest of China and no special treatment should be afforded.
