Abstract paintings by Cleveland native John Moore express ineffable aspects of being Black in AmericaCLEVELAND, Ohio — John L. Moore, a New York-based artist with deep Cleveland roots, is revered in the art world for his work as a teacher, curator, and maker of abstract paintings collected by museums across the country.

Barrie and Moore sat on folding chairs in front of an audience of roughly 100 in the lobby outside the new Roe Green Theatre in the recently completed expansion of the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center, where several of Moore’s paintings now hang. Of course, he knows his life in the U.S. is rooted in a general way to the slave trade and the African diaspora it produced. But he can’t grasp his particular link to Africa because that part of his personal history, including the name of the ancestor whose survival accounts for his presence here, is erased, gone forever.

Farver went on to become director of the nonprofit Spaces gallery in Cleveland from 1981 to 1985, and director of the MIT List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. . Based on that experience, and his part-time teaching at the Cleveland Museum of Art, he landed a full-time job at the museum in 1974 as an assistant curator and instructor in the Department of Education.Moore’s years at the museum propelled him to New York, where he curated numerous exhibitions and went on to teach at 15 colleges, universities, and museums across the U.S.

“He wasn’t someone who people readily could just go up and talk to,’’ Moore told Barrie at CWRU. But Moore said he felt comfortable with the director. However, Moore’s military experience, particularly in parachuting, inspired him to paint a series of abstractions for his master of fine arts thesis project at KSU.
