America’s intelligence agencies risk slipping back into dangerous pre-9/11 habits, a recently departed top counterterrorism official is warning in his first public remarks on the matter

.

“Some of these advances that we’ve made are fragile, and there are extraordinarily difficult questions the country’s going to have to address when it comes to evaluating risk, and allocating resources against that risk,” he said. “And that kind of a sophisticated conversation simply hasn’t been had.”The National Counterterrorism Center was set up to solve a gaping problem the September 11 attacks had revealed all too painfully: U.S.

All that put growing pressure on those agencies’ budgets. Much of the Center’s workforce is made up of people on temporary assignment from other agencies, including the Defense Intelligence Agency and the CIA. But as they’ve become increasingly strapped, those agencies have grown less and less inclined to loan their personnel to the Center, so its workforce shrank accordingly.“Information technology funding” isn’t the world’s sexiest topic.

At that point, Travers said, he worried the efforts to build on the study’s recommendations and rationalize the broader intelligence community’s counterterrorism work “had died on the vine.” Grenell’s approach was compounding his pre-existing concerns about NCTC’s resources, Travers told Atkinson . In Travers’ view, the new acting director was single-mindedly focused on making cuts, without aGrenell, a spokesperson for the U.S. mission to the U.N. during the George W. Bush administration, has bristled at criticism that he entered the job without formal intelligence experience.

In the meantime, Travers said he’d scheduled a meeting with Grenell to discuss the Center’s mission and work. On March 18, he went in for the meeting. But before he could tell Grenell about the issues facing NCTC, Grenell told him that Travers and his deputy were being removed from their posts.“He just initiated the meeting by telling me that my deputy and I were out, which was certainly his prerogative,” he said. “I found it kind of strange.

It’s a replay of accurate predecessors

There has to b some recourse possible. Where's the Congress.

TLDR: Travers was upset that his agency was losing resources (concern began before Trump admin). Politico fails to mention Dems constant push for reduced defense budgets, instead blames Trump/Grennel via Schiff quote. All in, not a huge deal either way. Political spin piece.

Most U.S. workers are at-will employees, which means they can be fired without notice and for any reason

Slap some escape tape on it

He’s clearly pitching for 45

The Trump admin knows this and likes it that way. When federal agencies are hampered and weak, it is easier for them to get away with their crimes.

Excellent article and a must read!

The post-9/11 'habits' are a lot more dangerous.

donnabrazile Yet even MORE BASHING of the Trump Administration. You people are so sick and stupid.

Given how dumb the US spying agencies are (they couldn't prevent 9/11 for example or stop Snowden, etc), it's kinda ironic to call them INTELLIGENCE agencies.

So he pitted our intelligence agencies against eachother again. Perfect. “Mission accomplished” - Putin
