Four tigers and three lions at the Bronx Zoo all had one of the symptoms of a respiratory infection: a dry cough. What does this finding mean for cats and dogs?

Nadia, a Malayan tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York, has tested positive for the new coronavirus. It's believed to be the first known infection in an animal in the U.S.Julie Larsen Maher/Wildlife Conservation Society/AP

Only one of the ill animals was tested because collecting diagnostic samples in big cats requires general anesthesia, the USDA, which announced the finding."Since all tigers and lions were exhibiting similar respiratory symptoms, the attending veterinarian felt it was in the best interest of the animals to limit the potential risks of general anesthesia to one tiger for diagnostics," it said.

A number of other cat species live at the zoo, including leopards, cheetahs, and pumas; none have showed signs of illness."They're even in a different genus," points out, chief of the zoological pathology program at the University of Illinois and an expert on medical issues affecting wild cats. In Belgium, there was a cat that reportedly tested positive for the virus, but there are some issues withLeyi Wang is a veterinary virologist at the University of Illinois with expertise in coronaviruses in animals. He created one of the tests used to analyze the tiger's sample.

They arent given the same test.

Helpful article which answered my concerns about neighbourhood house cats. (So I shouldn't make a joke about the need to keep tigers at a safe distance... but I will anyway.)

Calm down people the testing on a tiger isn't the same formula they use to test humans,Now if you care to test the difference go find out.

Is this Babylon Bee?

MorningEdition I hope wanted me to read each of those questions sarcastically, because I did and it was glorious

why are we not approving these veterinary labs to do human testing? 🤔

“Have someone take care of your pet if you can” while you are sick with the Coronavirus. Yes, cause folks are definitely gonna want to do that! I’d rather they watch my kids! Article really unhelpful and tone deaf. Says, essentially, we aren’t sure.

Why does the article not conclude the 5 cats contracted it directly or indirectly from a human? Tigers and lions aren’t interacting at the zoo, right?

Typical NPR BS with sole intention of spewing hate. Must be a socialist organization that discriminates in its hiring.

Do you want a vet to test you? Is it not important to know if animals can get it? Most of us have pets of they get sick can they infect us?

This could be a complete game changer. Seriously. Will this affect our relationship with our pets? Will we have to socially isolate our dogs and cats?

joepescimode

People are willling to pay big money to test this cat and not fellow humans ? the labs testing all these animals need to be converted to test Humans !

There are only a few of THEM. There's lots of YOU.

definitely will stay 6 feet away from tigers

'How did a Tiger get a test when I can't?'...…..Let me field this one.Tigers only have to ask for tests once!!!......

Not surprising. We knew it could jump from humans to Republicans.

Hey all you cool cats and kittens

Wait? There are more then 1.79 million people in the US?

Um...who was close enough to a tiger to infect it?

tiger ate the pagolin

Since we are on the topic of zoos...we all deserve better. Nobody likes isolation 😭

I call bs

Donald Trump guaranteed tests for all Tigers.

I applied to be tested when I was very sick for about 10 days or so total. I was told I wasn’t eligible to be tested despite having all of the symptoms... but a tiger can get tested, okay. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pander to the base much?

My cousin is a nurse in Texas. Her and three coworkers are all sick. They were exposed to multiple cases of covid. Employer is not willing to test them. Telling them they probably got it outside of work. This is like scary movie shit. The American Dream right?

Why are we testing tigers?

THOSE are the concerns? How about, if corona can move between species, does that offer *far* more opportunities for the virus to mutate, then move back to humans in a *far* deadlier version?

The testing does confirm something I just speculated until now. That c-virus can go as easily from us to animals as it goes from them to us. Those big cats are NOT going to like wearing masks. 😋

What about with pets?

Also...Who was brave enough to stick a swab up a Tigers nasal cavity?

Who gets to stick a swab up a tiger's nasal cavity?

Nowhere does it say they use a different test, I actually read the article. They did say that the virus was pretty much identical in animals as humans(no shit!) Keep misconstruing things though, just what everyone needs

So much for intimate contact. I seriously doubt any human got that close to any of those big cats. So the real question is.... how many feet is safe? 6, 27, 200? This thing is so much more contageous than they are saying now.

- why is it news that a tiger gets COVID then gets headline coverage when there are over 10,000 dead in the US. You don’t post their pictures .. that should be the headline.

Good lord...

It makes me wonder now if local wildlife could get infected, build up a pool of infected animals out in the wild, and then reinfect the human population at a later time.

I can't go within 6 feet of the cute checkout girl at Ralph's and some dude got close enough to a tiger that he got it sick The world is strange

This happens when everyone is home ....watching the Tiger king

WHY 2020?! WHY?!?!?!

The real question is, why are they testing tigers when humans are still waiting to be tested?

Well damn I hope the tiger is okay too. People aren’t more important 🤦🏽

This title is going to freak people out.

Of course they're saying it wasn't the same test as a human get's, but still. Why can some animal in a zoo get better treatment than a human holed up in their home? And just how do these tests work and where does the data go after? All relevant questions that need answers.

Animals can be vectors without being sick. That’s been known like forever. But how did it get tested when people can’t?

I love animals, don't get me wrong. But when a tiger is being treated better than humans there's something wrong with our state and federal governments.

Ummm pretty sure we know who did it...

Wasted a test

Meow meow meow meowing! 😹🙀😻Translation: I had a fever and lost all sense of taste and didn’t qualify to be tested! Did I need to walk in with my catsuit on? 😾🐅

Lets be honest, animals should stay away from humans.

is npr suggesting that a captive animal doesn't have a right to healthcare like a human does? why shouldn't a tiger be tested? they're fucking ENDANGERED SPECIES. there are 7.7B HUMANS IN THE WORLD. there are 4000 TIGERS! peta

Do you worry about Huskies and German-sheperds, they are always sniffing in the back alleys?

'Can I catch the coronavirus from animals?' Isn't that how this whole thing started? It doesn't seem super picky beyond 'nice lungs you got there, mammal'

I mean, some will be upset over a tiger getting a test, but I think it's important to see how these zoonotic viruses can be transmitted, more understanding is key to solving this

Your best reporting to date... since the school shootings .. keep it up

Stoppppppp! Seriously. Bronx Zoo posted a follow up!!!

find out next time on Dragon Ball Z

Why is there a Malaysian tiger in the Bronx, or any, zoo? And other questions.

Does that mean that tiger blood is not helping?

davidmackau, yep way more Tiger news in 2020 then anyone ever expected.

Not enough test for humans put find away to test a tiger

Why know why animals and pets are more important than humans to some people.

I’d like to know the answers to this!

No.
