OAKLAND — With James Kaprielian making his 2022 debut Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians, the A’s optioned right-handed starter Adam Oller to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Two more players will be dispatched from the roster Monday as rosters are reduced to the normal 26 as opposed to the 28 that was allowed for the month of April due to a condensed spring training after a 99-day owner’s lockout while awaiting a collective bargaining agreement. Last year’s minor league pitcher of the year for the Mets’ organization, Oller’s odyssey included stints in Independent League ball as well as Austrailia in 2020-21 before catching on with the Mets and flourishing in the minors. A’s manager Mark Kotsay expects to see Oller, 27, again at some point this season.
Kotsay said the A’s haven’t determined whether they’ll go with 13 or 14 pitchers on the 26-man roster. Whatever players are sent out, the blow is softened somewhat with the knowledge that the A’s have already used 36 players — tied with Detroit and Tampa Bay for the most in the American League. There’s a good chance another chance will come their way.
