Work on hydroxychloroquine delayed promising studies of convalescent plasma, a potentially promising COVID-19 treatment, scientists say.
Antibody-rich convalescent plasma has been used to treat thousands of COVID-19 patients, but no one knows for sure whether it works.
The trials have had a slow start, but they are, indeed, now underway.Vanderbilt's trial has enrolled about 50 patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Half receive plasma from former COVID-19 patients, and half receive a placebo — in this case, a saline solution containing vitamins.
Rice said the goal is to recruit about 500 patients, but the team will take a preliminary look at the first 100 participants to see how it's working. One of the biggest plasma research sites, Johns Hopkins Medicine, has ambitious plans to recruit more than 1,000 volunteers nationwide to receive plasma or a placebo. The research will focus on outpatients, designed to learn whether convalescent plasma can do one of two things: prevent the illness or keep infected people well enough to stay out of the hospital.
"I am very optimistic that this is going to work, but the only way we're going to find out is by doing a very careful clinical trial," said a lead investigator of the studies, Dr. Shmuel Shoham, an associate professor of medicine in Johns Hopkins' infectious disease division.
Shoham said he hopes to have preliminary results by mid-September to mid-October, but he said,"The truth is it all depends on whether people will step up to be part of the study."Just 50 patients have signed up, although more are expected.Baylor College of Medicine in Houston will participate in the Hopkins trial, and it is expected to start recruiting patients within the next week.
Trying convalescent plasma"seemed like a very reasonable thing to do," said Dr. Ashok Balasubramanyam, vice president for academic integration and senior associate dean for academic affairs at Baylor College of Medicine."It has worked in many other instances, such as
Ebola.""It's a bit of a pity that the indiscriminate use of the plasma began five months before the randomized studies started, but, you know, better late than never," Balasubramanyam said. Read more: MSNBC »
Biden: The Senate 'must not act on this nomination'
President Trump has nominated Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, and the battle over the vacancy on the bench continues to shape the US election. Follow here for the latest.
🤢 🤮 Give me a break. 12News Split the funding equally and have two potential options to help combat Covid-19. Why not utilize both? NBC news quoting scientists again. Why they push against hydrochloride is puzzling. People or scientist on both sides of the issue talk the good and the bad. If there is good, which there have been positive results. Why force a narrative of bad? One life saved is good.
To late NBC, too many doctors have come and are coming forward with their stories. They're not afraid anymore. Democrats and media like you have demonized a life saving drug for political leverage against the President. Many have died because of you. DesperateDemocrats This is really proving that not only is it Fake news in USA but also Fake media Healthcare practice. The corruption is embedded so deeply in our institutions ,agencies ,schools and college they are crippling the nation on every level. Dumbing us down .its Nihilism !
Trump bad, says associate professor who contacted us to tell us that. Nation using HCQ as a prevention are 71% safer than the western globalist lead big pharmacy controlled nations It works but will not make money! Now you want to sell plasma 'It's just go away, just go away ..things just go away' ..gonna wait til it goes away while people die.. will be 200K+ soon.. GTFOH
Our government is run by incompetent people. This started over 5 months ago and Covid-19 is still not under control. Over 150,000 people have died. It didn't have to be this way. When will the idiocy end? We have ignorance making decisions instead of science. Yeah because we all know what trump is up to at Walter Reed on Saturday 8/1 when he magically appeared with a bruise on his hand those white papers inbetween those newspapers. YOU WERENT FOOLING US
Comparing apples and oranges So... there aren't enough scientists on the planet to do both Wow... can you believe that there are actually people who believe the excrement that is rolled out of NBC? LMAO GG Elon GG Elon Yellow Journalism Hydroxy profited Trump. Plasma did not. The wealthy ruling class is the only group who will ever have access to this treatment.
Throwing billions upon billions at a vaccine is a waste too. A patch we wear that would identify Covid positivity would be a far better investment Aren't there medical experts and studies that sing the praises of Hydroxi? Both Nationally and Internationally? We can't do both? Oh that's right.. We are to busy playing polotics with Pandemic to do things that make sense. DT could cure Cancer and you'd complain.
If it delayed work on convalescent plasma why didn't it delay work on vaccines? It is being used Worthless PoS media. All because Kodak was going to start production dangerous precedent
WSJ News Exclusive | Convalescent Plasma Reduced Death Rate Among Covid-19 Patients, Study Data SignalsHospitalized Covid-19 patients who received transfusions of blood plasma rich with antibodies from recovered patients reduced their mortality rate by about 50%, according to researchers running a large national study. 'Doctors' opinions are a dime a dozen': Trump adviser Navarro again ignores experts, touts hydroxychloroquine'My view of this now is that doctors' opinions are a dime a dozen,' Navarro said. 'And you've got some doctors who say it doesn't work, you've got some doctors who say it does.' Doctors rarely agree on anything. That is why a second and third opinion is important before you decide which opinion to go with. I only trust the doctors that have the endorsement of the white house. Dime a dozen kind of like ass kissing useless Trump cabinet members!
Hydroxychloroquine No COVID Cure, Experts WarnExperts are warning about messages in a controversial video shared by President Donald Trump touting the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a recommended treatment for the coronavirus. But Doctor Trump said it works,😜
I Am a Doctor Too, and I Say Birds, Lizards, and Dinosaurs Are the Same CreatureAs anyone who has ever stood within earshot of me for longer than three minutes knows, I am a doctor. Specifically speaking, my PhD gives me dominion over all literature, but more specifically, I am a doctor of books written within a certain time frame that contain elements of the gothic. However, like Drs Drew, Phil, and Ben Carson, I like to think that I am also a doctor of any subject on which I begin speaking. And thus, it is completely within my purview as a doctor of philosophy to assert that the differences between birds, dinosaurs, and lizards are so negligible that these animals are, essentially, the same terrifying creature. Thanks for a smile on a terrible day
Doctors and Nurses Started the #MedBikini Movement to Protest a Sexist, Body-Shaming StudyMedBikini began as a protest against a sexist study, and grew into a movement shedding light on the misogyny still present throughout the medical field. Excellent!! We done!
How To Know If Your Own Doctor (Or A Doctor You Might See) Is A QuackRead this to figure out if your physician has some sketchy beliefs not supported by science. Illness is caused by demon sex, for example. It's actually made from media sperm. He has a vote biden sticker on his bumper If the doctor is hyped up by trump then that’s a guaranteed tell tale sign
