“The greatest ethnic dog whistle the right has ever come up with is ‘Christian,’ because it means ‘people like us,’ it means white,” the sociologist Samuel Perry said.

. Participants dressed in Colonial knickers, to evoke the American Revolution, or in animal skins, to evoke the Israelites. Jack Jenkins, a reporter for Religion News Service, told me, “They blew on shofars”—ram’s horns that Israelite priests blew, according to the Bible, to bring down the sinful city of Jericho—“believing they could literally overturn the election results.” Mastriano exhorted his followers to “do what George Washington asked us to do in 1775. Appeal to Heaven. Pray to God.

Two days before the Capitol riots, Mastriano said that he was heading to Washington, D.C., and “calling out to God for divine revelation.” He used campaign funds to charter six buses to shuttle followers to Washington, D.C., and told them that he would speak on the Capitol steps. Around 1, rioters broke into the Capitol, some wielding Bibles, “Jesus 2020” signs, “An Appeal to Heaven” flags, and shofars.

After the insurrection, Mastriano’s colleagues in the state legislature were outraged. “He needs to be expelled,” Vincent Hughes, a Democratic state senator from Philadelphia, said. “This was not a bus trip to the casino. This was a trip organized to overthrow the government.” Brian Sims, a Democratic state representative, has called for Mastriano to be court-martialed. “He’s not just a preacher screaming from the rooftops.

Christian-nationalist ideas don’t seem to be receding. “There’s been a doubling down,” Perry, the sociology professor, told me. According to his research, in August of 2020, sixty-eight per cent of white evangelicals believed that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were divinely inspired; by this February, that figure had jumped to seventy-four per cent. “That’s a big climb,” Perry added.

elizagriswold Terrifying

elizagriswold An excellent article

elizagriswold A Christian, goaltender nation. Jesus was a goalkeeper StanleyCupPlayoffs EdmontonOilers

elizagriswold Yes

elizagriswold The people who think that America should be a Christian country forget that there are indigenous people here before the Mayflower arrived

elizagriswold According to his wikipedia page, Mastriano attends a Mennonite church. Make that make sense. A career military man and a Christian nationalist a Mennonite?

elizagriswold

elizagriswold Well, guess what. I’m Christian, and wholeheartedly disagree. I believe in separation of Church and State. I’m voting for JoshShapiroPA FormerGOP

Well, if a sociologist said it, then it must be true! Also, your cartoons aren’t funny.

🤥

I guess someone forgot to tell him how many minorities are Christians. These people aren't too bright.

FYI Jesus was born in a 'brown' part of the world and was most likely quite 'brown' himself. So, believing in this whole 'Christianity-is-a-white-man's- religion' argument is where the real ignorance lies.

Stats show blacks and Hispanics are more likely to self-identify as Christians, which kind of blows up this viewpoint

Is Samuel Perry Jewish?

I'd believe the National Enquirer Before anything the New Yorker puts out. The New Yorker had become just pure fantasy.

How many times do they have to say they don’t believe you exist? They only believe the version of you they’ve decided works for them exists.

I would like to introduce sociologist Samuel Perry to a little place called Africa. Maybe he has heard of it?

The term Christian originated in Syria in the 1st century. They were not white. There are more Brown and black Christians than white. Worldwide the fastest growing church is in the Middle East yet the most persecuted faith of all in Iran, Pakistan, China, Afghanistan, S Africa.

So white...

How is it a dog whistle? You are the one saying it means white, not them.

I'd ask if the fact check department looked into this claim before publishing it but LOL.

Look at all these white people.

Sam is full of it.

Whereas the most useless title the left has ever come up with is 'sociologist.'

Jesus: I will build my kingdom with people from every tribe, nation, and tongue. New Yorker: Christian is white supremacy!

GOPocalypseNow Not a resurgence, it’s already surging

Umm….

Did anyone read the article?

A casual mention of God, or quotation from the Bible, lends veracity to the most brazen lie.

The media is the enemy of the people..

What?

Well that’s ridiculous.

Blacks and Hispanics are more Christian than whites. How can someone declare himself a Sociologist when he is not able to compare % of populations? Samuel Perry is a fraud, a disgrace.

yikes

NY’er has never read the Bible. Or opened a book or article about a Christianity around the world and throughout history. All in on 45+ genders so there’s that.

Wow. How amazingly incorrect.

Then Samuel Perry is not very wise.

Pew Research begs to differ.

Well he's a sociologist. You can't really imagine good takes from him

Has Samuel Perry heard of this little minor thing called Latin America?

Tell me you know nothing about the history of Christianity without telling me you know nothing about the history of Christianity.

South America has several of the most Christian countries in the world

There is nether Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. -Galatians 3:28

How Doug Mastriano’s rise embodies… the belief that God intended America to be a Christian nation. Yes. This is also true of *every* nation. Christ is King of all kings.

Really? Then explain why 78% of Hispanics go to church on a regular basis. Nice try racists nyer.cm

The last time I checked, and that wasn’t too long ago, I wasn’t white. Ignore these people.

most liberal elitist can't identify with christianity because it isn't simply 2+2=4. it's faith based . something they struggle with unless you're asking them to explain the big bang theory

The fact that you pen this nonsense shows how entrenched in your bubble you are.

Well, you know lynching blacks and gassing Jews has always been a highpoint of Christian civilisation for the bogus ones.

Pennsylvania Republican bows out to avoid showdown against fellow House GOP lawmakerRep. Fred Keller announces he won’t run for re-election this fall, making him the 14th Republican to say they won't seek another House term. I see fear in his buggy eyes 😁 They need to just grid the districts and then scale with each grid spacing accordingly. Make it standardized. This is a joke and we should be done with these kinds of constant games. I for one want both parties dissolved. Good. FlipTheSeat VoteBlue

Russia’s arrest of Brittney Griner, WNBA basketball star from Houston, adds to escalating global conflictThe athlete, who is Black and gay, was detained by Putin’s regime, which has stoked nationalism and homophobia and is admired by some in America’s far right. The chances of Russians starting to plant drugs on Americans trying to leave are HIGH. They're now resorting to North Korean tactics of detaining Americans as bargaining chips. Pathetic. Do the crime - do the time She knew what she was doing. No nuclear war for that issue.
