Clubhouse rose to prominence as a place for what amount to interactive podcasts. It hopes smaller, more personal audio chats will produce greater engagement on its app.

The startup is introducing a new feature, Wave, an invite mechanism meant to make it easier to start these small, closed chats. Clubhouse has largely been known for hosting the opposite: large conversations, in which organizers lead the topics but can include anyone in the audience. But internal company research has shown greater engagement on the app through more intimate discussions, like the ones it hopes Wave will expand.

Clubhouse was one of the standout apps of the past year, particularly at the beginning of the pandemic when it offered a chance to connect with people during Covid lockdowns. On that success, it has raised over $300 million in funding, most recently at a $4 billion valuation, according to data from Pitchbook.

New Year, New Rice Bowl: Beef Donburi With SpinachA well-seasoned rice bowl topped with tender strips of ribeye steak and sautéed spinach, along with shredded nori and fried garlic nubs to provide interesting texture and flavor. New head of Time's Up pledges openness after Cuomo scandalAlmost four years ago, a group of high-profile Hollywood women — producers, agents, movie stars — formed Time’s Up, an ambitious initiative to fight sexual harassment in their own industry and beyond, as the MeToo reckoning was taking hold. “It’s very hard for us to speak righteously about the rest of anything if we haven’t cleaned our own house,” s aid producer Shonda Rhimes, one of those powerful women, at the time. Tchen’s replacement, Monifa Bandele, says that the embattled organization, currently re-evaluating its structure, will operate with a new openness and rededicate itself to “people power,” giving a strong voice to women from all walks of life.
