A 1953 Vogue cover takes on a whole new meaning amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

This story is part of a series, Past/Present, highlighting images and articles from Vogue that have personal significance to our editors.

In April of 1953 Dwight D. Eisenhower was busy in his first 100 days, Queen Elizabeth II was a year into her reign, Audrey Hepburn would soon star in her career-making, and Yves Saint Laurent was submitting sketches to Christian Dior in the hopes he might land a place in the famed Parisian atelier.was a cheery photo of Evelyn Tripp, a model from Missouri who was reportedly discovered by the assistant of photographer Louise Dahl-Wolfe while shopping on Fifth Avenue.

The image was taken by Erwin Blumenfeld, one of my favorite fashion photographers. Long before Adobe’s Photoshop, Blumenfeld was tricking out his images with surreal illusions via various dark room techniques or set designs gone awry. He would apply the subtlest subversions to the era’s favored pretty-pretty-style of photography.

Despite the tangle of crossed wires, she’s unfrazzled and elegant as ever in a straw hat by Lilly Daché. Her Larry Aldrich dress is a tomato red that, per the magazine’s original copy, is “a colour that is due to cover a good deal of fashion mileage in the months ahead.” The photo correlates to a story inside the magazine about “Busy Beauties,” photos of women wheeling and dealing from bedside tables-cum-offices.

This image, which I originally thought would symbolize a day at the office, but doesn’t, comes closer to depicting my current working-from-home-life. Never has the “phone” function of my phone seen so much use. Left and right, I’m happily fielding calls from loved ones around the globe—Alone in my New York apartment it’s these calls that have so far carried me through my isolation. When my phone lights up, flashing the name of my incoming caller, I feel as delighted as Ms.
