After a few months of all-neon-green everything, the fashion crowd is switching gears and turning to a more organic source for color inspiration.
At New York Fashion Week, tangerine orange was the clear breakout color, both on the runway and in street style. At the spring 2020 shows, brands including Rosie Assoulin, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Staud, Tom Ford, Tanya Taylor, and more featured pieces in the bright, orange-y shade.
At some shows, there was actual fruit: One model at Collina Strada peeled an orange on the runway; at Mansur Gavriel, waiters handed out orange juice served in actual oranges. Meanwhile, Fashion Week attendees felt inspired by the cheery shade, wearing tangerine pieces while going to and from various events.
The appeal of the color is obvious: Tangerine and similar citrus shades are reminiscent of vacation, of travel, of escape. It's also just a really happy hue—which is the attitude we want to bring into 2020. Plus, the trend may have been huge in the spring collections, but tangerine is actually great for right now, as a way to liven up fall outfits. (It pops really nicely against the classic dark, autumnal palette.)
