Hold on to your puppies! Disney has revealed the first look at Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil and the results are nothing short of iconic. The upcoming Craig Gillespie-directed Cruella will take fans back to the 1980s for a glimpse of the young Cruella, and we can’t think of a better decade to showcase the eccentricities of the villain and her origin story. Her unabashed love of fur smacks of 1980s excess; imbuing Cruella with the hallmarks of New Wave subcultural style — the two-tone hair! That smoldering smokey eye! Those exaggerated shoulders! — puts a fresh spin on the live-action role originated by Glenn Close in the 1996 remake.

Fan reactions have drawn comparisons to everyone from Siouxsie Sioux of legendary British post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees, to Tim Curry’s Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the always-impeccably dressed Moira Rose (as portrayed by Catherine O’Hara) of Schitt’s Creek fame, and we totally see all of it.

According to IMDB, Nadia Stacey and Jenny Beavan are in charge of hair and makeup and costume design, respectively, and we can just imagine what their mood boards looked like for interpreting Cruella’s punk turn. Stacey has previously won a BAFTA for hair and makeup design for The Favourite in 2018, where she also worked with Emma, and Beavan is no stranger to Disney films, having designed costumes for Christopher Robin and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. She also nabbed both an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for her work on 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. When you’ve got an illustrious, award-winning team like that behind your look, it’s safe to assume they’re going to be serving up some truly exemplary looks.
We’re going to have to wait until 2021 to feast our eyes on Cruella’s makeup style, but in the meantime, we’ve rounded up some essentials to channel her sense of dark glamour all on your own. Except you should probably opt for some faux fur to complete the look — or skip it altogether. We may love Cruella’s style, but we prefer our furry friends just as they are!
