Sixty-two percent of all U.S. adults have canceled, or no longer plan to book, an airline flight, a hotel stay or another upcoming event because of the coronavirus outbreak, a new survey reveals.

Nearly 4 of every 10 who canceled their plans — about 59 million people — lost money from a cancellation, according to's online survey of 2,669 adults conducted April 1-3 by YouGov Plc. The results are representative of all U.S. adults at least 18 years old and have a margin of error of about 2%, Bankrate.com says.

Consumers seeking a refund should first contact the company they purchased from —"whether that was an airline, a travel agency, a ticket marketplace or another business,” says Bankrate.com analyst Ted Rossman."Most of these companies are being very generous with their refund policies. If you can’t reach a satisfactory resolution with them, you should bring in your credit card company.”...

passengers have canceled their reservations because of the coronavirus outbreak, and many flights have been canceled. or event received future credit such as a voucher for a future flight or a hotel stay. Money was returned to 47% of those who requested a refund. Fifteen percent received nothing for at least one canceled trip or event.

"Your best bet for an airline refund, rather than a future credit, is a flight cancellation," Rossman says."While airlines are being very generous waiving change and cancellation fees, those instances typically result in a future credit — not money back. You usually only get money back if the airline cancels your flight or makes a significant schedule change."
