Gary Friedman/Getty ImagesCasey Kasem was the original host American Top 40, which premiered 50 years ago this week.On July 4, 1970, the countdown started. Originally hosted by Casey Kasem, American Top 40 played"the best selling and most-played songs from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Canada to Mexico," as he stated on the first program broadcast 50 years ago as of tomorrow.
"You remember, at the end of the '60s, Top 40 was not the most popular format," Casey Kasem told NPR in 1982."And here we were coming along with a show called American Top 40, and people said, 'You must be nuts!'" By the early 1980s, the show was heard on more than 500 stations across America and on the Armed Forces Radio Network around the world. The show succeeded not just because it was a list of popular songs, but because of the humanity that Casey Kasem brought between the songs.
"The thing about Kasem was that he had such a warm vibe and he was such a good storyteller that he could read the most mawkish letter and make it very powerfully relatable," Molanphy says."You find yourself getting choked up listening to these little stories."
I remember trying to record my favorite songs on a cassette tape. We lost some passion when everything became available on demand.
Being stationed overseas in the Army Americas Top 40 was a link to home...listened every Sunday
That Blasted Superhero Worshiping pest, those blasted pets and Feedback! Of course, The Evil Widow Kasem got locked up for what she did. DANGER WOMAN
He always mentions WSB-TV 2 on America's Top Ten. Sad to say, he never got invited to any sci fi conventions. His Grieving Widow would have not gotten away with it, if it wasn't for the wretched little rug rat junior superheroes, TBC
Oh, boy, I remember it well! And with a smile.
The iHeartRadio app runs classic episodes back to back!
Listened religiously throughout the 70s
Sometimes, it takes a long time.. a very long time.. quite a long time ( even more than 50 years ) to see fruits from one's enterprise. The most important is to see the benefits. It's better late than never!
And he is a proud alumnus of waynestate. Tartars.
Every Sunday night on KPUG 1170 AM on my transistor radio
I saw him give the graduation address at waynestate graduate school in Cobo Hall when my dad got a doctorate of education in 1987. Casey Kasem was an alum. He ended his speech with his trademark “Keep your feet on the ground, but keep reaching for those stars”.
YouTube has a bunch of the shows if anybody is interested.
Ponderous man, f-ing ponderous.
dad was in the army, we moved a lot! no matter where we were, I always knew I could find the countdown on the radio, even in Germany.
Long distance dedication to you Casey...you all fill in the blank what you want to dedicate...free for all Friday.
I miss that show, and the letters he’d read from listeners with song requests.
People tuned in to listen to Casey Kasem, not the songs. The songs were just wonderbread.
