Interns, lower-level professionals and even more experienced professionals sometimes may be asked to complete office chores, and there may be times you feel like you have to do it. But don’t make it a habit. Stop the cycle. Here are four ways to say “no” to work you shouldn’t do:Part of being a professional includes juggling multiple projects. Successful professionals know what work to complete and when to complete it because they are continuously prioritizing the importance of projects.

If someone comes to you and asks you to complete office housework, clarify priorities. Let’s say your manager asks you to drop off a piece of mail in the mailbox that is across campus. You might say, “I am working on the gap analysis you asked to be completed by tomorrow. Is this more important, or can this wait?” This forces your manager to evaluate whether they need you or someone else to complete the task.

Success is in what you say no to - but sometimes you really do have to chip in especially in small business. Having tools to learn how to say no is a benefit. The one about asking “what’s the priority” is always good cause you can’t assume they know what you have on your plate.
