Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum might never have fallen for each other if not for their movie, “Pussy Island.”
“When you make things with people it’s a very sacred space, and when you’re compatible with somebody creatively it often opens up other channels, because you’re kind of sharing all of yourself,” Kravitz said in WSJ. Magazine’s fall women’s fashion issue of casting and directing Tatum in the film. “I’m really grateful that this movie has brought him into my life that way.”
Kravitz, 33, shared that she had her eye on Tatum, 42, as soon as she began developing her directorial debut — despite having never met him.
“I felt, even from afar, before I knew him, that he was a feminist and that he wasn’t afraid of exploring that darkness, because he knows he’s not that,” she explained, adding, “That’s why I was drawn to him and I wanted to meet with him. And I was right.”
The “Big Little Lies” alum was also drawn to the “Magic Mike” star because she liked that he historically played different roles than the one in their thriller.
In “Pussy Island,” Tatum portrays Slater King, a tech mogul who invites a cocktail waitress named Frida (Naomi Ackie) to his private island. While Frida is ready for a lavish getaway of a lifetime, what she finds is “something terrifying,” according to IMDb.
“I wanted to find someone who hadn’t played a dark character before, because I think that’s exciting to watch someone who’s mostly played boy next door, good guy, love interest, all of that,” Kravitz said.
The “Step Up” star was just as excited to step into a different type of role, which he saw evolve as filming progressed.
“When we first met, the movie was pretty different than its form now, but the themes were the same,” Tatum, whose company, Free Association, co-produced the project, told the magazine. “All the iterations it has gone through were all pretty punk rock, to be honest.”
And he appreciates the director — and his now-girlfriend — taking a chance on him.
“It’s always really intriguing to have someone bring you something that literally no one else has ever thought of you for,” Tatum said of Kravitz.
The pair first sparked dating rumors just days after Kravitz filed for divorce from her husband of three years, Karl Glusman, in January 2021.
Since then, Kravitz and Tatum have been spotted spending time together on several occasions, though they walked the red carpet separately at the 2021 Met Gala.
Tatum’s romance with Kravitz comes after his breakup from on-again, off-again girlfriend Jessie J. He and the singer ended things for good in October 2020.
Prior to linking up with Jessie, Tatum was married to his “Step Up” co-star Jenna Dewan for 10 years. He and Dewan, who share 9-year-old daughter Everly, finalized their divorce in November 2019.
Clearly, Tatum has a pattern of falling for women he works with, as he appears to be going strong with Kravitz, with a source exclusively telling Page Six in March, “Things are going great with Channing, and she is incredibly happy.”
The insider added that she’s even considering having a kid with him.
