Fireworks exploded over the New York City skyline during Macy's 46th annual Fourth of July fireworks display. Sonia Rincon has more from Long Island City.

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- Nearly three million spectators watched fireworks light up the night sky over the East River and New York City.

Long Island City has become a special place to take the fireworks in. The waterfront park at Hunters Point did not disappoint on Monday night as the show lit up faces in the crowd - many capturing the moment to relive or share.

"This is about a hundred times bigger than what I'm used to. I've seen really great sights and this is about as beautiful a view as you can get," said Cory Adams, who was visiting from Washington.

Celebrating America's birthday the way New York City does means celebrating its comeback from the pandemic, and its tradition of comebacks.

"We survived 9/11, we survived a bunch of crises, blackouts, increasing crime, craziness. We're resilient," said Camilo Henriquez of Queens.

It was another year of celebrating safely. That safety is thanks to the New Yorkers who welcomed all the visitors - everyone who kept calm in the crowd and cooperated with security, and the hundreds of police personnel and first responders on the job who provided it
