Whether you’re a seasoned bargain hunter or new to thrifting, the Mile High Flea Market (I-76 & 88th Avenue) has lots of deals to be found. The enormous flea market offers everything you need for a fun weekend on the cheap, including a farmers market, covered shops, food stands and amusement rides for the kids. Open every weekend year-round from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., the market often boasts more than 2,500 sellers. Regular admission is affordable at $2 per person on Fridays and $3 on Saturdays and Sundays. It’s National Donut Day on June 3, when everyone celebrates the sweet goodness of the iconic and popular treat. Jefferson County Used Book Sale
Mark your calendars, bookworms on a budget. There’s an ocean of deals at the Jefferson County Library Foundation’s Spring Whale of a Used Book Sale. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 3 and 4 and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 5. Held in the massive exhibit hall of the Jefferson County Fairgrounds (15200 W. 6th Ave.) in Golden, the sale boasts more than 90,000 books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, puzzles, games and more. Regal Cinemas’ Summer Movie Express
All aboard, bored kids! Regal Cinemas has scheduled 16 weeks of family-friendly flicks at select theaters for its popular (and budget-friendly) Summer Movie Express, from May 24 to Sept. 7. During the summer film series, selected G- and PG-rated movies show every Tuesday and Wednesday, the first show of the day, usually around 10 a.m. (Showtimes vary by location.) Each week, there are two family-friendly flicks and both play each day. Here in Colorado, the series starts June 7 at most participating locations, with a few getting started May 31. Urban Market
Find a cornucopia of local arts and crafts sold directly by the artist, including clothing, jewelry, antiques, furniture, unique treasures, delicious food and more at the Urban Market in Skyline Park in downtown Denver. Have fun in the sun while supporting local artists and businesses. Plus, there will be a live concert at each market starting at noon. This summer, the Urban Market is held most weekends, with an occasional Thursday market. Free Fishing Weekend
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) invites anglers of all ages and skillsets to participate in its annual Free Fishing Weekend on June 4 and 5. Although no license is required, all other rules and regulations apply. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy a favorite pastime or bait a hook for the first time. The CPW website is a river of helpful of information, including stocking reports, bait fishing basics and the best spots to take kids fishing. DFL Harmony Horse Expo
Horse around with fellow horse lovers at the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center (5540 E. Hwy. 86) in Franktown for the Harmony Horse Expo on June 10 and 11. The free event gives visitors the opportunity to take guided tours of the 168-acre property, learn more about horses and meet adoptable horses. Attendees will enjoy a variety of workshops and training demos. The event is open Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, the center is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a free concert by Brenn Hill on June 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. Bring a picnic basket and chairs to enjoy the festivities. Coloradans can get a taste of a solstice celebration at the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival at Bond Park (250 Park Lane) in Estes Park from June 24 to 26. Unicorn Festival
A magical world is springing up at Clement Park (7306 W. Bowles Ave.) in Littleton on June 25 and 26. Princesses, fairies, mermaids and, of course, real unicorns will be fluttering and prancing around at the Unicorn Festival. The event will be full of fanciful fun, including bouncy castles, storytelling, a unicorn petting corral, a mermaid, photos with a princess, a 66-foot dragon slide, castle obstacle course and more.
