Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn brings an "indie spirit" to the set, according to actor Karen Gillan. A veteran in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gillan has garnered acclaim for her performance as the blue-skinned cyborg Nebula, having starred in both GOTG films as well as the Avengers' Infinity Saga. Gillan is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy 3, scheduled to release in May 2023.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 also sees the return of Gunn, the writer and director of the previous two films, who was initially removed from the franchise by Disney following GOTG 2 after controversial statements he tweeted in the past resurfaced online. Disney eventually re-hired Gunn in 2019 to return for another Guardians of the Galaxy movie. With Gunn back at the helm and all main cast members returning, GOTG 3 is expected to round out the Guardians trilogy as the final film in the series.

While filming Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Gillan is also taking time to promote her latest film, Dual, alongside co-star Aaron Paul. IMDb recently had Gillan sit down with Paul to "Ask Each Other Anything" as part of the site's ongoing celebrity-on-celebrity interview series. Paul took the opportunity to ask Gillan about Guardians, particularly what it's like working under Gunn's directorship. According to Gillan, as big-budget and fantastical as Marvel movies can be, Gunn has a way of bringing the production back down to earth. Gillan said:

"What James Gunn brings to it is this real indie spirit ... you're not so aware that you're making a giant movie. It's like, it feels as loose and free and as flexible as an indie can feel sometimes ... And he always directs with a microphone. And so you're always just getting this like, booming voice from God essentially. He's like, 'Do it again. Do it like this.' And then he, like, throws out lines that aren't even in the script. 'Call him this, do this.' And then you literally hear him laughing over the microphone, which is also maybe the best feeling ever, too. Like, 'Yes, I made him laugh.'"

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 James Gunn Castings

Gunn's free-spirited directing style reflects in the tone of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, which have always carried a sense of rebelliousness appropriate for its dysfunctional band of heroes. The cast seems thrilled to be working with Gunn again, at least from a public-facing standpoint, and Gillan's comments hint that the culture on set has been good so far. Barring unexpected complications or a COVID-19 outbreak, such as that which rocked Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, filming for Guardians 3 appears to be moving steadily.

Though not much is known about GOTG 3's plot, Marvel has confirmed a few details to fuel an ample level of excitement. Comic book fan-favorite Adam Warlock, for one, will be introduced to the MCU and played by Will Poulter. Peacemaker's Chukwudi Iwuji is also expected to play an "extremely powerful," yet-to-be-named character. There's also speculation about a major character death. With much on the line, fans have plenty of reasons to keep their hopes high amid sadness over the Guardians' final adventure in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
