Eric Weddle, former University of Utah All-American safety, signs with Rams for playoffs

Weddle played 13 NFL seasons from 2007-19 after standout college career with the Utes

Eric Weddle’s retirement lasted just shy of two years.

The Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday morning signed the former University of Utah All-American safety to a one-year deal that will allow him to play in the playoffs. The NFC West champions open their playoff run Saturday night against the Arizona Cardinals.

In need of safety help with Jordan Fuller out for the season because of ankle injury and Taylor Rapp in concussion protocol, Weddle offers big credentials as a 13-year veteran with six Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro nods.

Weddle retired in 2019 after registering 109 tackles and four passes defended while playing in all 16 games with the Rams.

As a Ute from 2003-06, Weddle was a consensus All-American in 2006, a first-team All-Mountain West pick in 2005 and 2006, and the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year during the same two seasons.
