CLEVELAND, Ohio — The state of Ohio on Thursday reported 19,442 new cases of COVID-19.

That’s not a record, but it is the sixth highest total reported for a single day. All the higher totals have occurred since Dec. 28, the record being 20,598 on Friday, Dec. 31.

This is the third straight day when the daily case count has been over 19,000.

The total case count since early 2020 has now reached 2,132, 266.

Ohio’s death toll since the beginning of the pandemic now stands at 29,674. COVID-19 deaths are reported twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, though often the deaths being reported are weeks old.

A total of 7,032,160 Ohioans have received at least one vaccination, representing about 63.9% of Ohioans age 5 and up.

Since the beginning of 2021, there have been 15,324 deaths among people reported as unvaccinated, and 729 among people reported to be fully vaccinated. Since the start of last year, there have been 50,828 hospitalized Ohioans who were not fully vaccinated, and 2,991 fully vaccinated people hospitalized. These numbers are updated weekly, each Thursday.

The state does not report for COVID-19 cases whether people were vaccinated.

However, the total cases being reported recently likely are understated.

“Due to the high volume of cases being reported during the current COVID 19 surge, not all cases reported in the past 24 hours may have been fully processed and may not appear on the current trends dashboard today,” the Ohio Department of Health said. “All systems are functioning at max capacity to process cases as quickly as possible during the surge. We anticipate that the processing delay may continue for the coming days.”

Thursday’s recap:

* Total reported cases: 2,132,266, up 19,442.

* Total reported hospitalizations: 98,730, up 453.

* Total reported ICU admissions: 11,956, up 43.

Wednesday’s recap
