Sir Elton John has suggested if you have any secrets the last person you should ever tell is Ed Sheeran – after the flame haired singer leaked the news he had recorded a Christmas song with the music legend.

Sir Elton and 30-year-old Ed have teamed up for a festive tune that they hope will hit the top of the charts by Christmas Day.

However, 74-year-old Elton had hoped to keep the single a secret until they were ready to unleash it for the buying public to snap up.

However, Ed let slip that the pair had created a Christmas song earlier this year – and Sir Elton doesn’t sound impressed with his duet partner.

He told the NME: “Yeah, he let the cat out of the bag didn't he?'

“I was sworn to secrecy and then big mouth f*****g Sheeran goes to the Netherlands! It's supposed to come out – we haven't finished it yet, so there's still work to be done.”

Elton went on to say he is ready for a chart battle with LadBaby for the top spot – after the YouTube star claimed the Christmas number one in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

He said: “We've got the sausage roll man to deal with, haven't we? We've got LadBaby to deal with!

“Once we bump him off, we might have a clear path to a hit record. He seems to have the monopoly on Christmas records. And good for him!”

While the details of Elton and Ed’s song are still to be fully revealed, Ed did leak some of the details in an interview on the Jan-Willem Start Op show on Dutch radio station NPO Radio 2 earlier this month.

He claimed Sir Elton calls him daily and that the idea of a Christmas single was pitched last Christmas.

Ed said: “He rung me on Christmas Day and he said, [1973 hit] Step Into Christmas is No. 6 on the charts, and I'm 74, and I'm still having f***ing chart hits, this is great!

“I want to do another Christmas song, will you do it with me?”

Ed went on to explain the death of a friend convinced him to take up Elton’s offer.

The chart topping pop singer said: "I've never really wanted to do a Christmas song."

He continued: "It really just hit home how stuff can just change overnight.

“I was like, 'Why the f**k am I not doing a Christmas song with Elton John? I might not be here tomorrow, this will be a f***ing great way to celebrate Christmas’.”

Meanwhile, in his NME interview, Is Elton said he is looking forward to his impending retirement – as he is hanging up his tour microphone for good following the completion of his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour which is due to conclude in 2023.

He said: “At the moment I finish supposedly in 2023, in the summer, by which time I'll be 76 – and that's it, baby. I can't wait to do it and have a great time, and I can't wait to finish and say, 'No more – I've had enough.

“I will do records and I'll do my radio show, but as far as schlepping and doing shows? I've had enough applause. I wanna be with my family. I wanna be with my boys.”
