America's Got Talent has halted production after Welsh escape artist Jonathan Goodwin was rushed to hospital after reportedly being crushed between two exploding cars.

In a stunt that went badly wrong on set, the daredevil misjudged his midair jump.

America’s Got Talent: Extreme has paused as a result of the incident during rehearsal for the new show.

The stunt was supposed to see the 41-year-old escapologist free himself - and fall underneath the two vehicles before they collided.

But thing did not go to plan and he was rushed to hospital. It is It is unclear how long production on the talent show, an offshoot of America’s Got Talent, will be paused for.

A show statement said: "During a rehearsal for America's Got Talent: Extreme an accident occurred in which escape artist Jonathan Goodwin was injured while performing his act.

"He was responsive and was immediately taken to the hospital where he is continuing to receive medical care. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family as we await further updates on his condition."

An AGT spokesperson said in a statement to PEOPLE confirmed the accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Jonathan Goodwin and his family as he continues to recover from his accident on Thursday,” they said.

“In order to focus on the wellbeing of our crew, we will be temporarily pausing production on America’s Got Talent: Extreme and will resume the last few days of filming at a later date.

"The health and safety of our cast and crew continue to be our priority.”

The Brit has performed other similarly death-defying stunts on TV before and is no stranger to risky entertainment.

In 2013, he wore a straitjacket and dangled from a blazing rope over the River Thames in London.

He was suspended upside down from the London Eye and managed to escape, which was all part of his TV series The Incredible Mr Goodwin.
