Netflix will be releasing a documentary called Britney vs Spears, focusing on Britney Spears’s conservatorship case, on September 28.
The streaming giant announced the news on September 21 with the release of a short teaser posted across all its social media platforms. The 18-second clip featured a voice note Britney had sent to a lawyer on January 21, 2009, in which the pop star can be heard inquiring about eliminating the conservatorship.

The teaser was followed by a full-length trailer that Netflix unveiled on September 22. The Britney vs Spears trailer includes snippets of analysis about apparent financial incentives surrounding keeping Britney in a conservatorship, and what seems to be a leaked document from Britney's case — potentially new information. According to Variety, the project, directed by Erin Lee Carr, has been in the works for more than a year. Bloomberg first reported Netflix was working on a documentary about Britney back in February.

Of course, Britney vs Spears isn’t the first documentary that’s spawned from Briney’s complex legal arrangement. The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears premiered on the FX channel and Hulu on February 5, 2021. The Emmy-nominated documentary centers around the “Free Britney” movement and explores Britney’s “efforts” to get out of her 13-year court-mandated conservatorship.
Britney’s case has been in the limelight once again in recent months thanks partly to the documentary but also her first public court hearing on the case, which took place in June and shocked the world. During his testimony, Britney shared details about the legal arrangement and the toll it's taken across all aspects of her life. "I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m okay and I'm happy," Britney said in her statement. “I just want my life back, it's been 13 years and it's enough.”
Since then, the star has further addressed the court, making even more revelations along the way. After much back and forth, just last month, we learned that Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, had filed a petition to end the conservatorship after having agreed to step down from his role. “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance,” his petition reads.
Netflix’s Britney vs Spears is slated to premiere just one day before Britney's next scheduled court hearing on September 29.
