The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is once again urging parents to stop using and throw away their Boppy Newborn Loungers after two more children have died.

The Boppy Company intially recalled all 3.3 million of its newborn loungers—including the original newborn lounger, the Boppy preferred newborn lounger and Pottery Barn Kids newborn loungers—in 2021 after eight babies died due to suffocation.

According to the CPSC, the Newborn Loungers were recalled in September 2021 due to the risk that infants can suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing, or roll off the lounger onto an external surface, such as an adult pillow.

While the Newborn Loungers have not been legal for sale since they were recalled, since then, parents have continued to use the products or have purchased them on second-hand websites like Facebook Marketplace. CPSC and Boppy have sent numerous requests to Facebook Marketplace and other online marketplaces to remove the recalled products that continue to appear for sale on their sites.

The CPSC advises all consumers to immediately stop using the lounger and contact The Boppy Company for a refund at 800-416-1355 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or online at Boppy.com.

“These types of incidents are heartbreaking,” acting chairman of the CPSC Robert S. Adler said in a release. “Loungers and pillow-like products are not safe for infant sleep, due to the risk of suffocation. Since we know that infants sleep so much of the time–even in products not intended for sleep–and since suffocation can happen so quickly, these Boppy lounger products are simply too risky to remain on the market.”

“We are devastated to hear of these tragedies,” a spokesperson for Boppy also commented. “Boppy is committed to doing everything possible to safeguard babies, including communicating the safe use of our products to parents and caregivers, and educating the public about the importance of following all warnings and instructions and the risks associated with unsafe sleep practices for infants. The lounger was not marketed as an infant sleep product and includes warnings against unsupervised use.”

To follow best baby sleep practices, make sure baby is sleeping on their back on a firm and flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard without crib bumpers, blankets, pillows, toys or other items.
