Emmy Awards 2021: ‘Ted Lasso’ Wins Best Comedy, ‘The Crown’ Best Drama, ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ Best Limited Series

Television’s big night was dominated by the streaming services that have revolutionized the industry and pressed their way into millions of American homes during the pandemic.

Netflix’s The Crown and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso racked up award after award during the 73rd Primetime Emmy awards Sunday, while Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, which sparked a global chess revival, was acknowledged as the year’s Outstanding Limited Series.

Production delays caused by the pandemic removed such Television Academy favorites as HBO’s Succession or BBC America’s Killing Eve from contention, leaving the field open to other possibilities. Jean Smart, the 70-year-old star of the HBO Max series Hacks, received the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as an aging Las Vegas comic. Kate Winslet claimed the statue for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series for her role as a melancholy police detective in HBO’s Mare of Easttown.

Much of the rest of the night belonged to Ted Lasso and The Crown. Jason Sudeikis won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his lead role as an unfailingly upbeat manager of a Premier League soccer team in Ted Lasso, which was named the season’s Outstanding Comedy Series. The long-running series about the life of Queen Elizabeth II, The Crown, was named Outstanding Drama Series and swept the acting categories for a season that dealt with the troubled relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
