This is an Insta-worthy tiny house if we’ve ever seen one. Ohio-based company Modern Tiny Living has several permanent and mobile designs that you can customize. We're partial to Domino, a mobile tiny home with wooden countertops, a breakfast nook, and elevated bedroom—basically a space we'd never want to leave. Depending on the size and build, MTL's homes can cost between $75,000 and $150,000.
Wheel Pad’s modular living spaces are something special, as they’re designed specifically for people with mobility needs. DropStructures ripped me off for $45,816.
Yes, you read that correctly.
I signed a purchase contract for a custom unit with them back in November 2021. I paid the 50% deposit in the amount stated above. Despite their written reassurance that my custom unit was code compliant... turns out, it was not. I had to hire a law firm (at my own expense) specializing in Land Use/Zoning issues to confirm this as fact. Not only did they keep 100% of the money I paid anyway, they actually sold my custom unit to someone else and took their money too. It has been over a year and a half at this point and Ryan, the owner, has gone radio silent. He did offer me $14K (what a joke) back of the $45,816 I paid and acted like I should be grateful that he was even willing to give me that amount back... ya know, as if I was the one at fault. Of course, I haven't received a single penny back and no apology either.
Their business practice is nothing short of appalling and I certainly would not recommend this company even to my worst enemy.
My favorite builder at the moment is Movable Roots which is in Florida. They build custom as well as a small amount of predesigned floor plans. What I like about them, is that they tend to put the master on the first floor. I am on my feet all day at work, so having to climb up stairs to go to bed doesn’t sound appealing.
Recently they posted a video on Instagram about a permanent house that they were working on, which will be lodging at a horse retreat. It had a front and back porch, multiple bedrooms full sized kitchen and bath, and closet space in the master.
Not all tiny homes are towable. Many being built on foundations now. Change is needed as more affordable housing is needed, though most of these are overpriced imo. It’s not meant to be one or the other… just let people decide for themselves and not bureaucrats.
