19 Black-Owned Beauty Brands You Can Shop at Nordstrom
By Kaleigh Fasanella and Sarah Han
If you're a frequent Nordstrom shopper, you may already have noticed the retail giant's commitment to expanding its beauty selection and filling its shelves (both virtual and physical) with diverse brands that serve Black and brown consumers — ones that have often been overlooked or undervalued in the beauty market in particular. First launched in October 2020, Nordstrom's Inclusive Beauty category continues to grow and add more incredible and innovative Black-owned beauty brands to its lineup.
The retailer also just announced this month that it's taking the 15 Percent Pledge — committing over the next 10 years to increase total purchases from brands owned or founded by Black individuals ten times over by the end of 2030. By partnering with the non-profit organization, Nordstrom is dedicating 15 percent of its shelf space to Black-owned businesses. It's the first of nearly 30 retailers to make a 10-year commitment, in which time it will work to increase the number of Black-owned and founded companies it partners with.
It's already well on its way. You'll find plenty of Best of Beauty and Readers' Choice Award winners among the star-studded offerings, which now include Beauty Bakerie, Baby Tress, Briogeo, Unsun, and Uoma Beauty. Nordstrom describes this section as "a curated assortment of products created for everyone, regardless of skin or hair type, tone, complexion, or texture" — in other words, what should be the baseline standard for the entire beauty industry.
Of course, we appreciate seeing such a ubiquitous company prioritizing Black-owned brands and shining a light on all of the hard work independent brands are putting in behind-the-scenes to ensure Black consumers feel seen, heard, and represented in an industry still largely led by white males. And trust us when we tell you that these brands make up some of our favorite makeup, hair-care, and skin-care products on the market.
Now, without further ado, shop Nordstrom's Inclusive Beauty category to find your new must-haves for 2021 and beyond.
All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Buttah. Skin
Buttah.
Skin-care brand Buttah. may only be three years old, but it's already leaving quite a mark on the beauty industry. Founded by model and actor Dorion Renaud in 2018, the brand develops products with a mission to help alleviate dryness, oiliness, and hyperpigmentation specifically on brown skin. Potent formulas like this Vitamin C Serum target discoloration and retexturize skin with the help of ferulic acid — and, of course, vitamin C. There's also moisturizing glycerin and free-radical-fighting grapeseed extract to help minimize irritation.

Brown Girl Jane
Brown Girl Jane
A collective of three women of color put their professional expertise and personal passions behind Brown Girl Jane. The brand focuses primarily on CBD products, but there's also this Warm Cashmere Perfumed Candle — which when lit, mentally transports you to a cozy couch on a cool day. The name of the candle may sound more winter-appropriate, but fresh notes of rosebud and sweet freesia, layered alongside musk, will set a mood in any season.

Goodee
Goodee
One glance at these bottles and you can pick up on many of the interior design cues in Goodee's DNA. Twin brothers Byron and Dexter Peart, who both have a background in design, created a virtual marketplace to highlight the work of global artisans. This Frama Apothecary Body Wash and Lotion Set has notes of ylang-ylang, sandalwood, and cedarwood for an outdoor fresh feel and smell.

R&C
R&C
The faces and names behind R&C may be familiar, but The Fragrance Duo that the famous pair created leaves a lingering air of mystery behind it — especially when combined. Each side of the intertwined perfume bottles represents the brand's founders, Russell and Ciara Wilson. On the C side, you'll notice notes of red berries, pink peppercorn, and vanilla. Russell's version blends black tea with juicy pear blossom and vetiver. The magnetic bottles come in a set or can be purchased separately. Additionally, each can be worn solo or layered together.

London Grant
The London Grant Co.
Hailing from Atlanta, The London Grant Co. offers small-batch body-care products to meet the varying moisture needs of any skin type. Tiffany Staten started blending butters in her home in an effort to help minimize stretch marks when pregnant. She shared her concoctions with friends, and from there the brand was born.
The lineup of moisturizers focuses on minimal ingredients with big benefits. For instance, this Macadamia Safflower Sheer Glow Body Oil contains nine oils — including coconut, grape seed, and jojoba oils — to deeply moisturize the skin without leaving a slick residue behind.

Chris Collins
Chris Collins
If you haven't heard of Chris Collins before, remember the name. Collins calls himself a "scent storyteller" and that's exactly what his collection of fine fragrances reflects. Each of Collins' scents pulls elements from his world travels. As a part of his Renaissance Collection, Danse Sauvage Eau de Parfum combines plum, cognac, and chili notes for a boozy blend that aims to evoke Paris in the 1920s.

Autumn Adeigbo
Autumn Adeigbo
In addition to the stunning fashion pieces at the heart of Autumn Adeigbo's self-named brand, the designer also makes the cutest hair accessories. There's a clear common thread between the line's brightly colored dresses, intricately patterned tops, and its accents like this Metallic Brocade Headband. The vibrant mix of pastel pinks, green, and yellow is made even fancier with the help of silver highlights. All of Adeigbo's pieces are made to order in an effort to minimize fabric waste and excessive manufacturing.

Uoma Beauty
Uoma Beauty
Founded by Sharon Chuter, who made headlines when she instituted the Pull Up for Change movement (and #PullUpOrShutUp challenge), Uoma Beauty has been breaking makeup ground since 2019. Case in point: The brand's Say What?! Foundation has one of the widest shade ranges on the market, ringing in at a whopping 51. It's made up of six custom formulations that address specific concerns, like hyperpigmentation for darker skin tones, so it's no surprise it won an Allure Best of Beauty Award.
If you're not in the market for base makeup, there are plenty of other options to drop into your cart, including the eye-opening Drama Bomb Extreme Volume Mascara, volumizing Brow-Fro Blow Out Gel Pomade, and Best of Beauty-winning Black Magic Lipsticks.

Unsun
Unsun
Tired of a lack of clean sunscreen options afforded to women of color, Katonya Breaux founded Unsun in 2016 and set out to create her own. She wanted to formulate environmentally-friendly, reef-safe sunscreens that people with deeper skin tones, in particular, could trust to protect their skin without leaving behind any residue or ghostly white cast.
Thus, the Mineral Tinted Face Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 was born. Available in two shades, Light/Medium and Medium/Dark, this Allure Best of Beauty Award winner is also spiked with aloe, shea butter, and coconut oil to moisturize skin, color correct, act as a pore-minimizing makeup primer, and provide a fresh tint that suits olive to deep skin tones. And, of course, that's all in addition to providing broad-spectrum SPF 30, the American Academy of Dermatology-approved standard. We sure love a multitasking product.

Sienna Naturals
Sienna Naturals
Co-owned by the formidable Issa Rae and CEO Hannah Diop, Sienna Naturals is just getting started with its revamped lineup of products aimed at nourishing natural hair, improving scalp health, and ensuring your hair's existing texture and oils remain intact. Plant Power (pictured above) is a deep treatment that leaves hair soft and shiny while strengthening brittle, damaged strands with a dose of protein. It's one of Rae's favorite products, as it helps restore the health of her hair. The rich, creamy mask is also formulated with anti-inflammatory, scalp-soothing blue tansy oil, which she said is great for nourishing her hair but not feeling too gunky.
The other products available for purchase are the H.A.P.I. Shampoo, Dew Magic Leave-In Conditioning Creme, and Daily Elixir Nutritive Hair & Scalp Oil.

Rosen
Rosen Skincare
On a mission to address her life-long struggle with acne, founder Jamika Martin started brainstorming for her brand, Rosen Skincare, during her undergrad years at UCLA. Those ideas gave way to what is now a full-fledged lineup of 14 (and counting) products that treat and nourish acne-prone, hyperpigmented skin without the use of harsh, stripping ingredients. Oh, and the entire brand is $20 and under, making it super accessible.
The collection at Nordstrom includes the Break-Out Spot Treatment (pictured above), which is formulated with probiotic-rich radish root ferment and anti-inflammatory zinc oxide to diminish pimples overnight.

54 Thrones
54 Thrones
Founded by Christina Funke Tegbe, 54 Thrones is a luxury skin-care brand rooted in Ugandan- and Ghanaian-sourced shea butter. Growing up in the South, Tegbe's Nigerian relatives actually shipped tub-fulls of shea butter to her home. After leaving a job in corporate consulting in 2016, she turned her childhood connections to the motherland into a mission to share Africa's diversity and richness with the world.
54 Thrones makes masks, soap bars, and oils, but its gold-themed Beauty Butters are, arguably, the heart of the brand. For example, the Egyptian Lavender + Moroccan Mint Beauty Butter (pictured above) is comprised of a deeply hydrating formula infused with a plethora of nourishing oils — including avocado, Ghanaian baobab, Egyptian jojoba, and sweet almond — to soften dry skin in an instant. Apply a dollop of this head-to-toe hydrator wherever and whenever you need it for a dose of cooling relief.
There are seven varieties of the Beauty Butter available on Nordstrom, which retail for $24 each, or you can get a set of five full-sized butters for $80.

Beauty Bakerie
Beauty Bakerie
Beloved by influencers, makeup artists, and Allure editors alike, Beauty Bakerie offers a wide range of high-quality products including beauty sponges, face and eye palettes, setting sprays, and much more. Since fall is in full swing, might we suggest the Proof is in the Puddin' Eyeshadow Palette? It comes with nine shimmery, pigment-packed shadows in autumnal shades like burgundy, orange, cinnamon, and cocoa.

Baby Tress
Baby Tress
Founded by Hannah Choi and Shannon Kennard, Baby Tress is a New York City-based hair-care brand that caters to the specific beauty needs of women of color. Currently, it offers one hero product: the 3-in-1 Edge Styler Tool, which, as you can see, is a double-sided comb-brush hybrid that styles edges to perfection. It features natural boar bristles, a pointed end for precise styling, and a tiny comb for smoothing and separating the hair. Choose from six cute colors, including purple, orange, blue, and more.

BeautyStat
BeautyStat
BeautyStat was founded by Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist who has clocked in 20 years of experience creating formulas for big-name brands such as Revlon, Avon, L'Oréal, Clinique, and Estée Lauder, before finally launching his own line in 2019. And well, we're beyond glad that he did because its Universal C Skin Refiner has become one of our favorite vitamin C serums. The creamy solution contains 20 percent pure vitamin C, along with three patented ingredients that make the formula more stable (and, therefore, more effective) than many on the market. The best part? It's even suitable for super-sensitive skin, thanks to a hefty dose of soothing squalane.

Bomba Curls
Bomba Curls
Founded by Lulu Cordero, Bomba Curls is a hair-care brand inspired by Dominican beauty rituals. It focuses on healthy ingredients and sustainable formulas and currently offers two treatments designed for curly and coily hair types: the Dominican Forbidden Hair Mask, and the Dominican Forbidden Oil. Both products contain curl-nourishing ingredients like castor seed oil, coffee seed oil, and cupuacu seed butter, which smooth frizz and flyaways while defining curls at the same time.

Epara Skincare
Epara
Luxury skin-care brand Epara makes highly effective formulas that cater specifically to the needs of women of color. Its Cleansing Lotion landed a Best of Beauty Award this year because it's just that good, and its Hydrating Serum (pictured above) is a best seller spiked with soothing ingredients, such as licorice root extract, apricot kernal oil, and cotton thistle flower extract. The brand's products are especially ideal for sensitive skin as they're made without artificial colors and fragrance, as well as fruit acids.

Briogeo
Briogeo
Briogeo is behind some of our most treasured hair-care products — including the three-time Best of Beauty-winning Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask, which contains a powerful blend of rosehip, sweet almond, avocado oil, biotin, and algae extract to strengthen and restore dry, damaged hair. Other notable favorites worth trying are its Don't Despair Repair Strengthening Treatment Oil, and the Be Gentle, Be Kind Banana + Coconut Nourishing Superfood Shampoo & Conditioner (another 2020 Best of Beauty winner). Regardless of your hair type, the brand's products will add shine, strength, and hydration — plus, they all smell incredible, too.

MANTL
MANTL
Cofounded by Queer Eye's Karamo Brown, MANTL makes feel-good, fuss-free skin-care products for the face and scalp — including its Face and Scalp Cleanser with aloe, glycerin, and betaine (a naturally occurring amino acid with conditioning properties). Brown decided to create the brand after his own journey with hair loss, as he wanted to find a way to embolden other bald and balding men out there. That being said, while its products might be marketed toward men, there's no reason why women and gender-nonconforming folks can't use them, too.
