Since the very first images from the set of “House of Gucci” appeared back in March, fashion fans have been following the parade of period-appropriate, flashy couture looks. The first trailer gave a wider glimpse into the film’s deliciously over-the-top fashions, accents and drama, which covers three decades of Italy’s wealthy Gucci clan. While Lady Gaga, playing Patrizia Reggiani, is at the center of the film, Adam Driver, Salma Hayek, Jared Leto and Al Pacino also sport some notable and sometimes startling ensembles from the 1970s through the 1990s. Janty Yates is the costume designer, and the production has been given full access to the Gucci archive.
“House of Gucci” is based on the story of Reggiani, who grew up in a poor family in Northern Italy. After her mother married a wealthy businessman, Patrizia followed in her footsteps by marrying Maurizio Gucci of the illustrious luxury goods dynasty, played by Driver. When he divorced her, Patrizia hired a hitman to have him murdered in 1995. After serving 18 years in prison, she was awarded millions of dollars from her ex-husband’s estate. Reggiani is reportedly annoyed that Gaga has not met with her regarding the role.
Directed by Ridley Scott, “House of Gucci” opens on Nov. 24.
Here are some of the top looks from the film that have been revealed so far.
-
Gaga for Goggles
Rich Italians love to hit the slopes, and a variety of ski fashions seen in the film provide plenty of chances for Gaga and Driver to swathe themselves in fur. Here she sports Christian Dior ski goggles and a belted burgundy ski suit while sipping an espresso and uttering the instantly-immortal line, “I don’t consider myself to be a particularly ethical person, but I am fair.”
-
Close-Knit Couple
Adam Driver and Lady Gaga wowed the internet in luxe ski looks in the first photo released from the film. Driver sports a cozy cream-colored Aran pullover, recalling the “Knives Out” cable-knit moment, along with period-perfect outsized aviator glasses. Gaga, meanwhile, seems to already be thinking evil thoughts while donning a white fur Cossack hat, a snug black turtleneck and scads of jewelry even on the slopes.
-
All That Glitters
Covered in shimmering sequins, Gaga goes for big hair in this gold party frock with a built-in jewelry neckline. Could it be a harbinger of future golden trophies for her role?
-
All in the Family
Gaga is every bit the tasteful matron at home with the Gucci family as Leto tells her, “You are Gucci, you need to dress the part.” With a matching jacket to cover up the strapless white lace dress, the look recalls the couple’s wedding shown in the trailer, where she also wore white lace.
-
Bling Bling
Gaga crosses herself intoning “Father, son and House of Gucci” in this scene with Leto, wearing an ’80s-style pink and black polka dot puffed sleeve dress with a huge statement collar necklace and plenty of rings.
-
Stayin’ Alive
Patrizia and Maurizio Gucci lived in a luxurious Manhattan penthouse in the early 1980s, and in this scene in the trailer, it looks like they took full advantage of the city’s nonstop nightlife at clubs like Studio 54. Here Lady Gucci cuts loose in a sequined halter dress and even more jewelry than usual, as colorful clubgoers look on.
-
Murderess in Mink
Gaga is swathed in mink over a dress that’s an authentic Gucci design, made from canvas printed with the fashion house’s distinctive logo and trimmed in leather and horse-bit hardware. A similar dress can be seen at the Gucci archive.
