People Are Sharing Examples Of Outdated Boomer Thinking, And They're All True

Yeah, nope.

On Friday, u/AllFeministsUnite asked, "What is the most outdated social construct by the older generation?" It led to people sharing examples of things boomers do, say, and think that are beyond outdated.

Three people having coffee and an animated conversation

Here's what they said:

1. "My nan doesn't think women should drink out of bottles. She will insist that if you are a woman with a bottle of beer/soft drink, that it goes into a glass. Just women though. It isn't ladylike apparently!"

u/Tangtastictwosome

2. "My dad gets baffled and downright pissed when he hears of women traveling without their husbands. 'Girls' trip? And what is the husband supposed to do while you're gone? Just be at home? Insanity.'"

u/Kiasurp17

3. "The idea that you need to have cake when company comes over."

u/Fanabala3

4. "The older adults in my family hold the belief that children and very young adults don’t have real feelings, basically. If you’re under the age of 25, you NEVER know what you’re talking about, so shut up and let the grown-ups talk."

u/rowdyate9

5. "That you should work 9 to 5 at the same job for 40 years to retire and get that gold watch and a pension."

u/Constrictive_Freedom

6. "They think by the time you're 30, you should own a house, two cars, and be married with two children."

7. "That everyone going to college/university must be extremely smart and other professions are for the not-so-privileged ones."

u/Billy_Shark

8. "That saying, 'No problem,’ or something in a similar vein is somehow ruder than saying, ‘You’re welcome.' This is something I’ve had elderly family members mention a few times, and I genuinely do not understand it."

u/buriedclementines

9. "Printing fucking EVERYTHING. Like, why? Such a waste of money."

u/MrLionOtterBearClown

10. "Staying married to someone who treats you poorly because, 'Divorce is wrong.'"

u/momma_bear_3

11. "Addressing a married woman as, ‘Mrs. Husband’s first and last name.’"

u/plaidleaf

12. "I think older generations are way out of step with tattoo acceptance. I was raised that it was just for sailors and prisoners."

u/atlantachicago

13. "When they say, 'Just go into that business and ask to speak to the manager about their job openings. He will be so impressed by your initiative, he will probably hire you on the spot.' No, that's not how the world works now."

u/alwaysmyfault

14. "The way they treat mental health. Like, 'It's all in your head.' No."

u/eviltimeline

15. "When they think you shouldn't be able to move in with a significant other unless you are married."

u/LightWeightFTW

16. "That online friends aren’t 'real' friends. My grandparents and I always disagree with this."

u/_razver

17. "That a man has to ask a woman’s dad for permission to marry her."

Do YOU have any examples of outdated millennial social constructs? I'd love to hear them in the comments!
