Topline

Thousands of dogs and their owners descended on a historic mansion estate in Tarrytown, New York, this weekend to take part in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the 145th iteration of the event but the first to take place since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Key Facts

This year’s event is a far cry from the usual show: instead of Madison Square Garden, the dog show is being held on the grounds of Lyndhurst Mansion in the suburbs of New York City, once the home of railroad tycoon Jay Gould.

Because of coronavirus pandemic restrictions, organizers pushed the dog show back four months from the usual February until June to allow the event to be held outside.

The dogs are also competing without their usual audience—spectators are banned from the dog show this year, and only people who have a dog competing are permitted to attend.

The Best In Show title, given to the finest dog of all competing breeds, is slated to be awarded Sunday evening.
