It’s not really summer (or the lead-up to summer, anyway) without a celeb musician dropping a surprise single, and that’s exactly what Lorde did last night, releasing her new hit “Solar Power” on streaming platforms, after it was accidentally leaked and quickly pulled. The song was accompanied by a sunny seaside music video in which Lorde purrs, “I hate the winter, can’t stand the cold” and smokes from a bulb of fennel. (Who can relate?) Of course, no music release would be complete without a maelstrom of social media discussion, with many noting the song’s seemingly climate-focused title:

Others felt energized by the song’s upbeat nature, especially after a long and punishing winter:

Lorde’s sun-soaked, summer-facing lyrics attracted plenty of commentary:

All in all, Lorde’s latest release was greeted with all the fanfare you’d expect after a year-plus of pandemic life and a depressing lack of summer jams. Now, excuse me while I learn the choreography from the beach-dancing part of the “Solar Power” music video.
