Maluma Collaborated With Balmain on a Miami Vice–Style Capsule

Over the past few days, we’ve seen the babetastic singer Maluma and Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing working on artistic endeavors on Instagram. Yesterday Rousteing posted a video on Instagram of himself intently coloring in an illustration with a collection of markers, asking his fans what their “fav colors” were. A black tank top–wearing Maluma, his tattooed arms ready to burst, did the same. Today, it was revealed that the two were coloring as a promotion for a collaboration for Balmain. It’s all parts blinding hues and oh-so-Miami, where Maluma currently resides. The collection started as tour outfits, but because of rescheduling due to COVID-19, it turned into a capsule. The collection, inspired by Maluma’s balmy, very hot album Papi Juancho and its intoxicating Miami Vice style, is a visual tropical vacation. Think sunset pinks, lush graphics, and golden yellows. “It’s been one of my goals to work with a respected fashion house on a collection, but this journey was more exciting as Olivier pushed me to design with him and sketch looks that I personally will wear off the stage, and showcase high couture with a bit of Papi Juancho,” said Maluma in a press release.

In the mix, there are retro graphic T-shirts and hoodies with trippy palm trees, sunsets, and “Maluma” and “Balmain” printed on the chest. Drawstring shorts in a bathing suit silhouette with bold stripes coordinate perfectly with a button-up shirt. There is also the impeccably tailored striped blazer that Rousteing used to tease the collaboration. According to Rousteing, creating the collection alleviated the stress from endless Zoom meetings: “My friend Maluma was quick to note that Balmain’s new relaxed Miami vibe—with all those pastels and eye-catching patterns—was a perfect match for his distinctive style and addictive beat.”

Maluma’s love for Balmain goes way back. Last August, the heartthrob wore a Balmain neon green suit to the MTV Video Music Awards that later appeared on the spring 2021 runway. And given the mutual love between the two creatives, this doesn’t seem like the last time that the two will be flexing their love for fashion together.
