The Met Gala is back! On Monday, April 12, Andrew Bolton, curator at The Met Museum's Costume Institute, and Anna Wintour announced the event's grandiose return after last year's pandemic-related postponement and eventual cancellation – and they're making up for lost time.
As noted by The New York Times, along with the event's return, Andrew Bolton and Anna Wintour shared that there would be two interconnected Costume Institute shows following the theme of American style. Part One, titled "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," aims to center contemporary designers and will be open for viewing this September following Fashion Week. (The Gala itself is suggested to be the closing event of NYFW.) Part Two, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” will arrive in May 2022, coinciding with the event's traditional calendar. The celebrity hosts will be named next month, though, in-theme, The Times reported that American designer Tom Ford and American poet Amanda Gorman are rumored to be involved.
“We very consciously wanted this to be a celebration of the American fashion community, which suffered so much during the pandemic,” said Bolton of the theme. “I think American fashion is undergoing a renaissance, with young American designers at the vanguard of discussions around diversity, inclusion, sustainability, and conscious creativity. I find it incredibly exciting.”
No word so far on whether the pandemic will cause the already exclusive guest list to become shorter or if the guests will be encouraged to lean into the festivity of a masquerade ball in the name of safety. If the Met Gala can hold up safely and responsibly, we are very excited to see the return of fashion's biggest night out!
